Fake Uber Driver Tries To Take Boston Students For Ride

At about 8:40 p.m., a Simmons student reported to the college that she was with another student on Brookline Avenue in front of Simmons Hall. One of the students had requested a ride through the ride-hailing service.
When the student approached what she thought was her ride on Brookline Avenue, the driver falsely identified himself as the Uber driver, the advisory said, and told the Simmons student get in. The student who filed the report urged the other student to check the license plate with her Uber app. At that point the vehicle sped off, the advisory said.

An Uber spokeswoman noted people booking rides receive the make, model and license plate number of the vehicle, as well as the first name and photo of the driver.
Rebecca Walls, a spokeswoman for “Who’s Driving You?” a campaign by the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, which is pushing for strict regulation of ride-hailing services, said, “College women should be aware of this budding trend — individuals impersonating Uber drivers. For safety reasons, Uber shouldn’t be exempt from identifying its cars with obvious external markings.”

The big brother of Fox sitcom star Mindy Kaling reveals that he got into medical school by pretending to be African American.
Fifteen years ago, Vijay Chokal-Ingam shaved off his straight black hair, trimmed what he calls his “long Indian eyelashes” and started checking off the “black” box for race on his med-school applications.
Before long, the Asian Indian American was interviewing at Harvard and Columbia, and found himself on wait lists at the University of Pennsylvania, Washington University and Mt. Sinai — despite his relatively mediocre 3.1 GPA and his family’s considerable wealth.

Chokal-Ingam says he’s revealing his race ruse now because he heard that UCLA is considering strengthening its affirmative-action admissions policies. He says it’s a myth that affirmative action benefits the underprivileged.

A sexual predator was arrested Wednesday for posing as a police officer and sexually assaulting a teenager in Brooklyn and cops believe the man could be responsible for other attacks, law enforcement sources said.
Walter Barnes, 47, was driving his 2010 Lexus with Georgia license plates when he approached the 18-year-old victim on Gates Avenue in Bushwick on Oct. 2 and told her to get in, cops said.
The victim told Barnes that she was looking to buy cigarettes and the alleged sicko offered to drive her where she needed to go, cops said.

An unidentified man posing as a member of Congress made it into a secure area backstage at President Barack Obama’s appearance at a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation awards dinner in Washington Sept. 27, according to a White House official.
The man entered the backstage area during or just after Obama’s speech at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center as members of Congress gathered there to have their pictures taken with the president, said the official, who asked for anonymity to discuss the incident, which has not previously been made public.

Boston Marathon bombing defendant Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s lawyers were kicked out of Russia for pretending to be tourists and impersonating Federal Bureau of Investigation agents during interviews, U.S. prosecutors said.
The Russian government notified the U.S. that three visiting lawyers, who weren’t named, also refused to confirm their legal status while conducting their investigation, prosecutors said in a filing yesterday in Boston federal court. The U.S. government’s claim comes as defense lawyers seek to delay the trial, set for this year, until September 2015.
“At least some of Tsarnaev’s problems in conducting an overseas investigation arguably are of his own making,” prosecutors said.

Tsarnaev’s lawyers have never denied he carried out the attack on the Boston Marathon. The defense has said in court papers they will attempt to pin most of the blame on his older brother, Tamerlan, who died in a police shootout in the days after the attack. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was 26 when he died, was radicalized by Islamic extremism and influenced his brother, who looked up to him, the defense has said.

The driver told the officer who pulled him over that he was actually assisting police 'because other drivers noticed him and slowed down, thinking it was a police vehicle'.
The driver, whose name was not made public, was summoned to court to face a charge of impersonating a police officer.
The car did not have any flashing lights.

On May 29 three people allegedly approached an East Point, Georgia, apartment posing as police officers, "intending to force their way inside" when the woman inside the apartment shot one of the would-be invaders.
According to WSB-TV 2, the renter "cracked the door to take a look outside and that's when police say the three tried to push their way inside."
Police say said that "one of the suspects raised a handgun but the woman fired first," grazing one attacker "on the head and the backside."
The suspects fled, but the wounded one was apprehended.
