Seven others were injured in the Prospect Heights blaze, including one person who was said to be in critical condition and two others who suffered serious burns, according to the FDNY.
The dead man, who owns a deli in the area, was in a second-floor apartment above Flatbush Hardware, located on Flatbush Ave. at the corner of St. Marks Ave., when flames broke out in the store shortly before 3:30 a.m.
The man's sister-in-law told the Daily News that he chose to jump because he could not access the fire escape.

Man dies in leap from burning Prospect Heights building; seven others injured: FDNY
Flames broke out early Wednesday in the Flatbush Hardware store in Prospect Heights. The man who perished, who was in an upstairs apartment, could not reach the fire escape and chose to jump. The FDNY said seven others were injured, one critically.

At least 18 people were injured in a Bronx fire early Tuesday, including three firemen, authorities said. One of the firemen was seriously injured.
The fire broke out at about 4:30 a.m. in the Claremont section of the Bronx on Washington Avenue at East 169th Street, FDNY officials said.
Authorities say 15 civilians suffered minor injuries and five of them refused medical attention at the scene
