Grocery Chain Salute To Military

Food City actually dates back to 1918 when a store was opened in Greeneville, Tennessee, but K-VA-T Food Stores’ official beginning took place in 1955 when founder Jack C. Smith--with his father, Curtis and uncle, Earl--opened the first store in Grundy, Virginia. Since that time, Food City has grown in leaps through the acquisition of several Piggly Wiggly operations in Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, along with Quality Foods/Food City, White Stores, Winn Dixie and BI-LO units in east Tennessee. The company has also grown steadily by expansion into new market areas while remodeling and replacing existing locations as needed to best serve their customers.

CRF Frozen Foods announced that its expanding its recall of frozen vegetables and fruit with best buy dates between April 26, 2016 and April 26, 2018.
In a statement, CRF said the company is performing this voluntary recall in cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Christina LaRock's daughter Callie had just poured herself a bowl of peas from Trader Joes, which she eats every day after school, when LaRock got a recall alert from Newscenter 5's mobile app.
"I caught the name Trader Joe's Organic and I said 'I shop there every week'," LaRock said. The peas Callie was eating as a snack were among the 854 frozen foods possibly contaminated.
"My heart sank," said LaRock, as Callie approached her mother with an empty bowl and asked for more. "I said 'actually Callie, you can't'."
Three-hundred and fifty-eight products, sold nationwide under 42 separate brands, are included in the recall. Several brands included in the recall are carried by national chains with local stores, like Trader Joe's, Costco and Walmart.
"It makes me nervous as a mom and consumer," said LaRock. "It makes me want to grow a green thumb and start to put a garden in my backyard."

Why Not Use Baskets For Grocery Shopping? What Would Donald Trump Do?

It is reassuring to know this is the only person who will not shop in Cambridge after the progressive compassionate city council bag tax. Everyone else will gladly pay ten cents extra for each bag. Only rich and wealthy people shop in Cambridge. They eagerly give away money they do not need. Now that Cambridge is the academic enclave created by the repeal of rent control, only rich people will live in Cambridge. Useless eater parasites who cannot afford to live in Cambridge should move out.

Cambridge, MA Bans Plastic Bags, Not Plastic People

Three issues remain unaddressed. Reusable bags get dirty and accumulate bacteria which is brought into homes. Not a benefit to the health of residents and shoppers. Secondly cashiers and front end managers will be required to enforce this ordinance. Will the city compensate the businesses for the time spent by employees working for the city enforcing this nuisance? Thirdly how much of police resources will be spent responding to disputes about this nuisance which endangers cashiers?

Cambridge City Council Bans Single Use Plastic Bags

Headline is misleading. Reusable plastic bags will be permitted. Stop and Shop already provides them for ten cents each. Also, free plastic single use bags are prohibited. Unexplained is what makes a "renewable" bag. Shoppers will use their bacteria covered reusable bags over and over again and again spreading germs. Yech. The City Council should consider a divestment order eliminating councilors. One could say "We got along without city councilors for most of creation."

When Arthur T. - whom employees likened to George Bailey in 'It's a Wonderful Life' for putting people before profits - was ousted by a board of directors controlled by Arthur S. Demoulas in June, workers refused to work and marched the streets in protest.


Warehouse employees failed to make deliveries to the stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, leaving shelves bare and costing millions in lost revenue.

Largest UK Grocery Retailer Stops Selling Israeli Products

Tesco, the UK’s largest food retailer, has strongly rejected claims that the Gaza crisis is forcing it to stop selling Israeli produce and products, saying that in the case of Israeli dates packaged under its own label it had decided to stop selling them in September “for commercial reasons.”
According to the grocery chain, the dates are grown in Israel but packaged in the West Bank.
“It is clearly marked as “West Bank (Israeli settlement produce)” so customers are fully aware of what they are buying,” a spokesman told The Jerusalem Post. “As part of our regular review of our range, we will not be selling this product for much longer.”
The spokesman said that in line with the recent request from the British government on “origin of food” labeling, the dates have to be marked and sold as such, and as Tesco customers have been asking for such information, the company has to supply it.

The clerk behind the counter at Stan’s Health Foods has not been formally identified, but it is believed the clerk was a 46 year old woman who had previously worked in law enforcement, including a stint with the Secret Service.
When a man entered the store wielding a 6 inch hunting knife, the clerk kept her composure the entire time. It seems she was willing to let the suspect get away with some cash, but when he put the hunting knife to her chest, she wasn’t having any of it.
She immediately drew her firearm and fired a single shot, striking the suspect in the chest.

High Cost of Dishonesty

Curious that this essay appeared when it did. In September 2013 I visited the local Farmer's Market which is held on Tuesdays on City land on an overpass near Harvard University's Science Center. I'm a fairly savvy food shopper. I noticed early that the prices at this market were higher than Whole Foods and all of the other markets in the Cambridge area. That includes Stop & Shop, Shaw's (formerly Star Market), Trader Joe's, and DeMoulah's Market Basket. But it is convenient and when I pass by and need one item it is more efficient to shop for the one item than to make a one mile trip to the markets. Their tomatoes taste better unless you purchase organic tomatoes at the markets. But even then the Farmer's market prices are higher. One particular vendor treated me rudely. I ignored it because I did not spend much time or money at his space.











In September I needed tomatoes and saw that his looked ripe enough to eat for my salads and their price was lower than the other vendors. I picked up some at the sign's listed price of $3.50 per pound. He  placed it on his scale. I noticed it was less than a pound. He said the price was $4.00, which I paid without question. I did not want to argue with this man who was rude to me on a few previous occasions. I went home and weighed the tomatoes again. My scale showed about three-fourths of a pound. He had charged me $1.40 over the stated price for one item. I was upset and recognized that this man could not be trusted. Was it only me or was he doing that to others? I did not know but I will never shop at his stall again unless it is an life-or-death emergency. 

Perhaps few people who shop at this market have any monetary concerns. Many people at Harvard University, and many Cambridge residents,  own trust funds or are related to wealthy persons and have little need to worry about a few dollars for food each week. Many of the customers at this market are Harvard students. To some of them overpaying is not a problem. 

This essay raises the question of why politicians and lawyers who lie so freely are trusted at all? They steal much larger quantities of money each day without using scales.

A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP TO PUBLIX

Yesterday I was at the Villages Publix supermarket buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Owen, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had an elephant?

So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete, (certified), so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I had stopped to pee on a fire hydrant and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.

Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the World to think of crazy things to say.

Publix won't let me shop there anymore.

Profit Percentages Vie With Volume As Best Business

John Crudele cites profit percentage alone making it appear that grocery stores are not a good bet. But good economy or bad, people have to eat. Grocers make their money on volume. It is possible to go for years without an attorney. But weekly visits to a grocer are common. Grocers have a higher number of visits per year per person than do lawyers and doctors.
