Urgent action is needed to combat a yellow fever epidemic in Africa amid signs it is turning into a global health emergency and a severe shortage of the vaccine, academics have warned.
With nearly a billion people at risk from the deadly disease in Africa and Latin America and the danger of an outbreak in Asia, immunologist Professor Daniel Lucey and Lawrence Gostin, a professor in global health law, called on the World Health Organisation (WHO) to declare an emergency saying delays over Ebola had "cost lives".
And they also said that because of the surge in new infectious diseases in recent years – thought to be driven in part by climate change – the world should now set up a permanent committee to decide how to respond as new threats emerge.
Angola is in the grip of its worst yellow fever epidemic since 1986 with more than 250 deaths, and the disease is spreading rapidly – Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have all reported cases.

In an article called A Yellow Fever Epidemic: A New Global Health Emergency? in the journal JAMA, the academics, of Georgetown University in Washington DC, warned: “The looming threat of a severe yellow fever vaccine shortage exists amid epidemics in Africa and potentially in Latin America and Asia.”

Since the 17th century there have been sporadic outbreaks of the disease outside its normal range in southern Africa and South America, usually in sea ports.
This happened in Europe in 1730 and 1821, when the UK was affected, and there have also been outbreaks in the US, such as in New Orleans in 1905, Memphis, Tennessee, in 1878 and Philadelphia in 1793.
Yellow fever kills people in a particularly nasty way. It initially causes symptoms such as fever, a significant backache, shivering and vomiting for about three or four days.
But shortly after they seem to recover about 15 per cent of patients are hit by a much worse fever that gives them the jaundice from which the disease gets its name.
They can then start bleeding from the eyes, nose and stomach, with further vomiting and cramps. About half of those who get this more severe strain will die as a result. There is no treatment.

Since the 1980s, the medical community has reported a range of new disease threats, such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), West Nile virus, bird flu and swine flu.
There are thought to be a number of reasons for this, including the growth of the human population coupled with the ease of international travel; the global trade in animals and plants; the loss of natural habitats which has forced animals to look for new places to find food; and climate change, which has enabled animals to move to different places.

The WHO, which said last month that yellow fever was a threat to the entire world, said that holding an emergency committee meeting on yellow fever was "under discussion".

The world has been horrified by the rapid growth of the mosquito-borne virus Zika that has spread through all of South American and has threatened the United States. The virus may cause birth defects in children and neurological problems in adults. The World Health Organization has declared a global emergency to deal with the virus as the world faces an increase in the widespread levels of the virus.
No one except certified lunatics or perhaps the villains in James Bond movies are likely to call for an increase in the Zika virus. But an unfortunately large number of people, neither certified or uncertified lunatics, are keen on spreading another virus, the cancer of anti-Semitism, that is spreading throughout the world. Yet, like Zika, anti-Semitism is a public health risk and requires a coordinated international response, including perhaps the WHO, and immediate international action. As in the case of Zika, finding a vaccine to counter the virus of anti-Semitism may take years but the task must be undertaken because the cancer is growing and must be eliminated.

At the Inter-Parliamentary Coalition for Combatting Anti-Semitism held in Berlin on March 14, 2016, the British Minister for Justice Michel Gove remarked that anti-Semitism is not just the oldest hatred in the world, it also a virus that mutates.
In Britain today the virus has found a home in people of all political persuasions.

The virulent disease of anti-Semitism must be eradicated. It should be the task of all political leaders, particularly a leftist leader like Jeremy Corbyn, not simply to criticize anti-Semitism, an action that is commendable, but also to distance themselves from the carriers of disease. Researchers throughout the world are seeking to find the formula for expelling the virus Zika. The political and social leaders of the world should similarly expel the carriers of the virus of anti-Semitism from all rational and respectable organizations.

Mosquito-borne Zika Virus Spreads Through US, Danger To Pregnant Women

U.S. health officials are reporting new cases of a mosquito-borne virus linked to birth defects.
Three cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in Florida, and two pregnant women tested positive in Illinois. Texas and Hawaii also have confirmed cases, including a baby born with a birth defect.
The growing cases at home are traced back to overseas, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a travel alert over the virus, warning pregnant women to avoid some of the most popular American vacation destinations, reports Elaine Quijano of CBS News' digital network, CBSN.
In the handful of confirmed cases in the U.S., those infected traveled outside of the country and tested positive once they got home.
The Zika virus is caused by the Aedes mosquito. It's been determined women can pass the virus to their babies, causing birth defects.
The CDC's warning to pregnant women is clear: If you have the symptoms, see a doctor and get tested for an infection.
All of the Zika cases in the U.S. involve foreign travel. The Florida victims traveled to Colombia and Venezuela and the two pregnant women in Illinois visited Central America and the Caribbean. A Texas man was also diagnosed after he returned from El Salvador in November.

Brazil is claiming thousands of babies have been born with brain injuries. Officials there are urging women - who can wait - to hold off on becoming pregnant until the crisis is under control.
In less than 200 days, Brazil is set to host millions for the 2016 Olympics. There is no vaccine and no course of treatment for the Zika virus.

Pregnant women who have traveled to regions where the Zika virus is prevalent should be tested for the infection, according to new guidance from US health officials.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said doctors should ask pregnant women about their travel and certain symptoms.
And, if there are signs of infection or reason to believe the fetus may be affected, the woman should be tested and ultrasounds should monitor the baby's development, the CDC recommended.
Zika is spread through mosquito bites - with outbreaks currently in the Caribbean and Latin America.
The tropical virus has been linked to microcephaly, a birth defect in which the head is smaller than normal - and the brain may not have developed properly.
There is no vaccine for the virus, but a developer said it created a genetically modified mosquito that reduces the number of mosquitoes spreading Zika in Brazil.
Zika infections typically only cause a mild illness - if at all.
Most people with Zika don't develop symptoms, but those that do usually only develop a fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.
Those symptoms rarely last longer than a week.
However, there's mounting evidence that the infection can cause birth defects if acquired by a pregnant woman.
Yet, in the Brazil cases, most of the mothers appeared to have been infected during their first trimester.
However, CDC officials have said that there is some evidence the birth defect can occur later in pregnancy.
The CDC issued guidance last week that women should consider postponing trips to 14 destinations.
Those places include Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Suriname and Venezuela.
Women who are trying to get pregnant - or thinking of getting pregnant - were also advised to talk to their doctors before traveling to those areas.
They were also advised to take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

It appears that the primary harasser, the charming and always delightful lesbian graduate student in psychology at Harvard University Medical School is on hiatus, replaced by a chemistry major. Not certain but that is the initial observation. She brings an extraordinary enthusiasm for harassing a 70-year-old broken white man after 45 years of previous criminal abuses by crime families, police, FBI informants, Communists, Harvard University campus police, building superintendents, affiliated lawyers, and assorted psychopaths. On Sunday, June 28, 2015 in addition to the usual sleep deprivation and disturbances every one or two hours, she added dropping large pieces of wood and metal for ten minute periods at a time. That was her personal flourish to the usual pattern of abuses. 

I revealed on this blog, which Harvard University lawyers relentlessly remind me, "No one reads your blog." that homosexuals rejoined this criminal harassment begun in 1968 in New York City. These homosexuals mostly Communists and FBI informants (Is that triple redundancy?), enhanced the harassment both at my humble residence and as I do errands. Additional evidence of the misguided focus of the FBI. In his June 28, 2015 Boston Herald column about the New York state prison escapees, Howie Carr refers to the FBI as "Famous But Incompetent."



I used to call them the Federal Bureau of Intimidation. In either case these legacies of J. Edgar Hoover are reportedly from the San Francisco area offices. Boston FBI employees have had enough stress relief which they get from harassing disabled and elderly persons in the Boston area. The San Francisco agents and informants need some recreation. What better activity than harassing a 70 year old white man who survived 45 years of abuse? These are brave courageous FBI employees. No need to direct energy at violent criminals or terrorists. The FBI hires criminals to conduct their criminal abuses. They prefer to target an old man who is barely moving. He won't fight back. He won't harm them. 

They try to provoke violence by intense and severe harassment. They try to create violence which was the false claim by police employees of California Syndicate in 1990 in Cambridge. That crime family hired Cambridge and Somerville MA police for a complete frame up. It included several  police employees, seven defense attorneys, five judges and a few prosecutors. Oh and one social worker and a state public records employee. See brief description of that event at this link.

Add to the motivation (stress relief, and just for fun) for targeting me while police resources are diverted from watching known violent criminals and suspected terrorists, ordinary civilians who do not like "wise asses." Harassment intensifies. Homosexuals rejoined the daily abuse. Has the Supreme Court of the United States emboldened them? Homosexuals are like the other two wealthy and powerful victim groups who rule the cultural revolution.  Ever since high school I had friends who were what were called flamers, homosexuals who openly lived as homosexual. They knew I was not one of them. They respected me as a friend. I grew up in a mixed race neighborhood and went to school with black children. One black classmate would run 100 yards to knock me down whenever he saw me. I attended parties in college where I was the only white guy. I went on a cruise with 1,000 people, four white the rest black. I always defended black people and supported them. I admired Mohammed Ali when he stood up to the selective service system. But in 1979 a team of government thugs began a relentless 35 year character assassination campaign calling me racist. It woke me to the fact that people are clueless about others. Collectivism has taken control of how Americans see one another. White people are all racist today. They enjoy white privilege. Even poor white people who have no education and live without running water. All black people even the multi millionaire athletes, celebrities, businessmen, and government chiefs are victims. It is irrational what is going on in this country. I used to help women when they were in trouble. Now women attack and harass me, as if I am trying to rape them as I do errands. For 45 years the U.S. government including but not limited to the FBI told everyone I knew, know and met, "He’s a homosexual." Huh? That was news to me. They didn’t tell me. Now even the homosexual thugs harass me. Haven’t had much sleep in the past two weeks due to relentless harassment where I live. Entire body aches. They are working overtime. Must be under pressure to get control.

Beginning on or about June 20, 2015 an intense campaign of severe harassment at my residence disturbing my sleep and preventing me from sleeping began. It continues as of June 25, 2015, when it was so brutal I anticipated having a heart attack of a stroke. I am not certain if that was the goal, or if it was to provoke violence, or all three. One thug who conducted one day of abuse actually expressed his surprise that I survived his attempted homicide. In any case the lawful authorities remain silent and inactive as bystanders while this criminal abuse continues. Unable to determine if it is in fact Somerville, MA police employees who harm me trying to cause my death. It appears to be from Somerville and perhaps an associate of the California Syndicate which harassed me since 1968. Little progress on finding the source of difficulties with my home computer. An upgrade did not fix the problem.

Unable to provoke violence, the latest team of abuser police and FBI bullies from Somerville, MA were joined on Tuesday June 9, 2015 by some of the Harvard University building superintendents and one of their criminal associates, using psychiatric drugs. There was another illegal entry to my residence when drugs were placed into foods I ingested. The charming and always delightful graduate student in psychology at Harvard University Medical School rejoined the bullies for more psychopathic activities. To repeat I am not under the care of any psychiatrist or any psychologist. There is no court order permitting treatment without consent. I never volunteered for any medical research project as a human subject. These are criminal assaults, and trespass. The FBI continues tampering with and interfering with USPS mail, telephone and email communications. The FBI scared me in my impaired state in 1973 after government psychiatrists drugged me for 80 consecutive days, contrary to law. Then the FBI used me to fight organized crime for 15 years and did not pay me. They did pay, and continue to pay,  a woman I dated for three months when I was in law school who turned out to be a lesbian. She is now married to a black homosexual FBI informant. They are paid to pretend to be my friends and to prevent me from enjoying the basic rights of American citizens, and to prevent me from getting relief from 45 years of relentless harassment 24/7. Charming couple.

Better attention to details keeping me under surveillance and harassment than the TSA exhibits looking for weapons. It shows the priorities of the ruling class. Focus on harmless, law abiding persons for abuse. Leave dangerous violent persons alone. They may hurt you.

They must be the same people who harassed me in those jurisdictions when I lived there. It was the California Syndicate who hired local police to implement a police frame-up in Cambridge in 1990-91. New Cases Of Ebola In New Areas of Africa

CNN reports that the World Health Organization has received reports of 14 diagnoses this week in Guinea and Sierra Leone, with 31 cases last week. The number of cases per week has begun accelerating in June– this is the second week more cases have been recorded than the previous week– triggering fears that a second wave of the outbreak may affect the two impoverished nations. “The outbreak is not over and the response efforts must be sustained until we get to zero cases throughout the region and are able to stay at zero for several months,” warned the U.N. Mission for Ebola Emergency Response on Thursday.
In addition to concerns regarding the number of people infected, experts are expressing concern at where these cases are being diagnosed. In late May, Guinea began recording cases near its border with Guinea-Bissau, threatening a country with few resources to combat an outbreak of the magnitude its neighbors experienced over the summer. At the same time, Sierra Leone’s Awareness Times began reporting an increase in cases in Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, Lungi, an area about 17 miles north of the capital, Freetown. Describing Kuffu Bullom as a new “hotspot,” the Awareness Times reported that they had evidence that the new cases were the product of an incident in which “an Ebola patient was sneaked into Kaffu Bullom chiefdom from Kambia district few weeks back and this is what has set off the chain reaction of Ebola infections in Kaffu Bullom.”
The newspaper added that “dozens of armed soldiers” had been deployed to the area to prevent quarantined individuals from leaving their homes or anyone from bringing Ebola patients to the area.

The issue of hygiene is a serious problem in this country. Until we can begin to take hygiene seriously, we will continue to live at the mercy of God,” Francis Fordia, Chief Administrator of the Foya-Borma hospital in the country, told the Liberian Observer. He noted that Ebola is not the only threat facing Liberia: “Let us look at the impact that malaria has and the number of people who have died from what we consider a common sickness. This is all because we don’t want to clean our environments. A lot of dirty water sits around where we’re living, with mosquitoes breeding in front and behind the houses. People do not want to cut the grass around their houses and these (behaviors) are unacceptable.”

But the World Health Organization resisted sounding the alarm until August, partly for political reasons, despite the fact that senior staff in Africa proposed doing so in June, The Associated Press has found. The two-month delay, some argue, may have cost lives. More than 10,000 are believed to have been killed by the virus since WHO first announced the outbreak a year ago.

But they held off on declaring an emergency in part because it could have angered the countries involved, interfered with their mining interests or restricted the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in October.

Unhygienic working conditions are a 'key contributor' to the 131 million working days lost each year in the UK and millions more around the world, to illnesses including colds and flu.
Bacteria and viruses can multiply on hard surfaces, remaining infectious for up to 24 hours, hygiene expert and visiting professor at the University of Salford, Dr Lisa Ackerley told MailOnline.
She said the average desk is a prime breeding ground for infections, before urging people to disinfect their desks, telephones, keyboards and computer mice.
She added that better cleaning and hygiene measures could result in 'significantly fewer sick days'.
Now, a new infographic lays bare the stark reality of how important it is to detox your desk.
It shows one in five workers fail to clean their workspace before eating, while two in three eat lunch at their desk.
Twenty per cent of people never clean their computer mouse, while around 80 per cent of common infections are transmitted by touch.

The FBI has alerted businesses to destructive cyber attacks, after Sony Pictures was hacked last week allowing Brad Pitt's film Fury to be illegally downloaded 1.5 million times.
Four unreleased films have also been made available on the internet since the attack on Monday, including a remake of 1982 musical Annie and Mr Turner, a biopic about the eccentric British painter.
A group calling themselves Guardians of Peace froze Sony Pictures' computer systems worldwide, posting a message that warned it would release 'top secrets' unless its 'request be met'.

Cybersecurity experts said the malicious software described in the alert appeared to describe the one that affected Sony, which would mark first major destructive cyber attack waged against a company on U.S. soil. Such attacks have been launched in Asia and the Middle East, but none have been reported in the United States. The FBI report did not say how many companies had been victims of destructive attacks.
“I believe the coordinated cyberattack with destructive payloads against a corporation in the U.S. represents a watershed event,” said Tom Kellermann, chief cybersecurity officer with security software maker Trend Micro Inc. “Geopolitics now serve as harbingers for destructive cyberattacks.”

The report said the malware overrides all data on hard drives of computers, including the master boot record, which prevents them from booting up.
“The overwriting of the data files will make it extremely difficult and costly, if not impossible, to recover the data using standard forensic methods,” the report said.

CDC Denies Enteroviruses Linked To Illegal Alien Children

The CDC argued EV-D68 is not new to the U.S., having been identified in California in 1962.
“In previous years, it has not been as commonly identified as other enteroviruses,” CDC said. “This year’s increase in confirmed cases is not due to a recent introduction in the United States.”
However, evidence buried in peer-reviewed medical journals provides support for the argument enterovirus D-68, or EV-D68, in the United States was a relatively rare disease. The EV-D68 epidemic occurred only after the surge this year of unaccompanied alien children illegally crossing the border from Latin America, a region where the virus is more prevalent among young children.
The CDC records nearly 700 people who have been diagnosed with the virus this year. Five children have died while infected.

The concern is that Latin American children in the U.S. might be carriers of EV-D68 even if they display no symptoms of the disease. It can be spread, the study said, by sneezing, coughing and the poor bathroom hygiene commonly found among Latin American unaccompanied alien children.

WND reported last week, a peer-reviewed article by German medical doctors challenges a key CDC assumption regarding Ebola, concluding patients who show no symptoms can still transmit a virus like Ebola to another person by a sneeze or a cough.

A typical example cited is an infected doorknob that could transmit a virus to healthy children for the next three to five days, with a secondary possibility of transmission via the respiratory “oral-to-oral” route more likely to occur in crowded living conditions.

Five Children Dead From Enterovirus

At least five children infected with the respiratory illness known enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) have died in the U.S. in the past month.

The lastest confirmed victim was a four-year-old New Jersey boy, Eli Waller. He died at home on September 25. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed the cause of death Friday night. But health officials say they have no idea how he contracted the virus. A health official says Eli was “asymptomatic and fine” when he went to bed but died overnight. He had no known preexisting immune weakness.

The CDC reports that in the past month and a half, at least 538 people in 43 states and the District of Columbia have become ill with EV-D68. Most of them are children and some developed limb paralysis. Polio, which can cause paralysis and death, is a type of enterovirus.

Missouri Warns Parents: Keep Young Children Away From Hospital

The virus has been hitting kids the hardest, and doctors in Harrison say they started treating children with respiratory symptoms a couple weeks ago. Testing for virus is not readily available, but with EV-D68 likely already in the area, the hospital is asking hospital visitors sixteen and under to stay away.
Dr. Adam McCall says, "A hospital is a place for sick people, and sick people typically have immune systems that are not working well, and so what we want to do is make sure that kids that could potentially carry this virus are not bringing the virus inside the hospital."

Virus Among Children Spread To 10 States

According to Mark Pallansch, director of the Division of Viral Diseases at the CDC, similar cases to the ones in Colorado have been cropping up across the U.S. At least 10 states -- Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Georgia -- have reported suspected outbreaks of human enterovirus 68 and requested CDC support.
"Viruses don't tend to respect borders," ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser said. "It is only 10 states now, but it's going to be across the country. So if your state doesn't have it now, watch for it, it's coming."

To stay healthy, the CDC recommends basic sanitary practices to avoid spreading the virus, including washing hands, avoiding those who are sick, and covering the nose and mouth during sneezes or coughs.
Meyappan said parents of asthmatic children should make sure that their children's inhalers are easily accessible and that there is a treatment plan in place if an asthma attack continues to get worse.

A highly contagious viral disease has killed at least 15 dogs in Lowell.
Lowell Animal Control Officer Darlene Wood told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 there have been 15 confirmed cases of the canine parvovirus in the past two weeks.
In each case the dog has died.
“We’re asking dog owners to check and see if their dogs have updated vaccinations or have been vaccinated for the parvovirus, and if they have not, to certainly go to a veterinarian and get that done,” Wood said Tuesday.
She told WBZ there have also been cases of the virus in the Berkshires, Worcester County and on the North Shore.
