Musical Favorites Reveal Most About A Person, New Book

[From article]
This question, so deceptively simple, is explored to great and fascinating lengths in Tom Vanderbilt’s new book “You May Also Like: Taste in an Endless Age of Choice” (Knopf).
“I was simply feeling overwhelmed not only by choices, but what people were saying about those choices,” Vanderbilt tells The Post.
“A simple trip to a restaurant, or to a site like Amazon to buy a product, or to watch a movie on Netflix became like an epic quest,” he says. “What was the best? Whose opinion should I trust? I felt swamped by other people’s tastes, and I was trying to gain some sense, in essence, where all those preferences came from without simply saying, ‘There’s no accounting for taste.’ ”
As it turns out, there is and there isn’t. Our tastes range from innate to acquired, cultivated to contextual, adaptive to reactive.

Infants, long before they are verbal, express preferences: They stare at more attractive faces longer. Babies like the foods they like and refuse the ones they don’t. Children develop favorite colors and numbers, with no real reason to have either.
We adults are no less cryptic in our tastes. As Vanderbilt writes, we express preferences for such mundanities as toilet paper (hung over or under?), bathroom stalls (middle or end?), and even the color of his book jacket (blue or red?).
[. . .]
“Liking is really about anticipation and memory. Even as you are looking forward to something, you are looking backward to the last time you enjoyed it. You can spend weeks waiting for ‘the meal of a lifetime,’ which will itself last a few hours . . . That so many people photograph their ‘memorable’ meals speaks not only to how fleeting the experience may be but to how photographing it helps actually make it memorable.”
We are all born with the same simple tastes: All infants love sweetness (breast milk, life) and have an aversion to bitterness (possible poison). It’s an evolutionary adaptation designed to keep us alive.
[. . .]
Then, too, are our acquired tastes: Few people like the flavor of coffee or beer upon that first sip, but they force themselves to keep going until they actually experience pleasure.
[. . .]
Just as we can likely guess someone’s socioeconomic background through the way that they talk or the state of their teeth, so we can through taste.
The expressions “good taste” and “bad taste” didn’t enter the lexicon until the 20th century, but ever since, Vanderbilt writes, “taste is social comparison.” More people will admit to listening to NPR than Howard Stern, or reading The New York Times to this very paper, though there is significant crossover with both.
[. . .]

“If all I knew about you was the last five books you read, I probably wouldn’t know much,” chief engineer Glenn McDonald told Vanderbilt. “But if I knew the last five songs you listened to on a streaming service, I’d probably know a lot about you.”
Music is among the most personal, visceral taste we have, one we now engage with, thanks to smartphones, daily and intimately. As Vanderbilt points out, “People will talk about ‘my music’ in a way they do not talk about ‘my movies.’ ”
[. . .]
The only constant when it comes to our tastes, Vanderbilt writes, is that they’re always changing. It’s our basic nature to seek out the new and the normal, the fantastic and the familiar.
[. . .]
“Even when we look back and see how much our tastes have changed, the idea that we will change equally in the future seems to confound us,” he writes. “It is what keeps tattoo removal practitioners in business.”

Misguided Fear-Based Policies May Repeat Genocide of Nazi Germany

[From article]
BEFORE he fired the shot, the Einsatzgruppe commander lifted the Jewish child in the air and said, “You must die so that we can live.” As the killing proceeded, other Germans rationalized the murder of Jewish children in the same way: them or us.
Today we think of the Nazi Final Solution as some dark apex of high technology. It was in fact the killing of human beings at close range during a war for resources. The war that brought Jews under German control was fought because Hitler believed that Germany needed more land and food to survive and maintain its standard of living — and that Jews, and their ideas, posed a threat to his violent expansionist program.
[. . .]
To expand Germany’s Lebensraum, Hitler aimed to seize Ukraine from the Soviet Union, starve 30 million Eastern Europeans and transfer the food to Germany. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the campaign had two major aims: the control of fertile Ukrainian soil and the destruction of Jews living there. It was this invasion that placed defenseless Jewish children at the mercy of the murderous Einsatzgruppen.
[. . .]

The mass murder of at least 500,000 Rwandans in 1994 followed a decline in agricultural production for several years before. Hutus killed Tutsis not only out of ethnic hatred, but to take their land, as many genocidaires later admitted.
In Sudan, drought drove Arabs into the lands of African pastoralists in 2003. The Sudanese government sided with the Arabs and pursued a policy of eliminating the Zaghawa, Masalit and Fur peoples in Darfur and surrounding regions.
[. . .]
The Chinese leadership already regards Africa as a long-term source of food. Although many Africans themselves still go hungry, their continent holds about half of the world’s untilled arable land. Like China, the United Arab Emirates and South Korea are interested in Sudan’s fertile regions — and they have been joined by Japan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in efforts to buy or lease land throughout Africa.
Nations in need of land would likely begin with tactfully negotiated leases or purchases; but under conditions of stress or acute need, such agrarian export zones could become fortified colonies, requiring or attracting violence.
[. . .]

economic migrants and war refugees are making perilous journeys to flee to Europe. In response, European populists have called for the strict enforcement of national borders and the end of the union. Many of these populist parties are supported by Russia, which is openly pursuing a divide-and-conquer policy with the aim of bringing about European disintegration.
[. . .]
It is not difficult to imagine ethnic mass murder in Africa, which has already happened; or the triumph of a violent totalitarian strain of Islamism in the parched Middle East; or a Chinese play for resources in Africa or Russia or Eastern Europe that involves removing the people already living there; By TIMOTHY SNYDER

Harvard Square Specialty Deli, Cardullo's, Stays Open, Sold To New Owners

Serving Fine Foods in Harvard Square Since 1950

[From article]
The Cardullo family is parting ways with their longstanding business, Cardullo’s Gourmet Shoppe, a landmark in the heart of Harvard Square for the past six decades.
Sisters Donez Cardullo Tavilla and Francesca Cardullo Sibboe have sold the popular business to Newton couple, Rich and Kim Wilson. The sale will be finalized in four to six weeks once the liquor license is transferred, but the new owners plan to keep the shop’s name and mission, according to Tavilla.
[. . .]
Tavilla’s grandfather, Frank R. Cardullo, opened the Brattle Street shop in 1950 and her grandmother, Mary Cardullo, ran what was then just a neighborhood deli. At the time Frank Cardullo was busy running Wursthaus (which means sausage house in German), a restaurant nearby.
Cardullo’s Gourmet Shoppe was always owned and operated exclusively by the Cardullo family. Tavilla’s father, Frank N. Cardullo, took over the family business when his father became ill, and he ended up selling the restaurant to focus on the shop.

Massive Food Stamp (EBT) Fraud Investigation In Alabama

[From article]
The massive probe, dubbed Operation T-bone, targeted those they say have been cheating the food stamp system to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars and sending at least some of the profits via wire transfer to Yemen.
The District Attorney's Office, the FBI, the Gardendale Police Department, the USDA, the Alabama Department of Human Resources  and the Secret Service all worked together on the investigation. Birmingham police, the U.S. Marshals, the Internal Revenue Service, Homeland Security Investigations, Walmart Global Operations, Hoover police, Pelham police, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office SWAT team and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency helped with today's raid in a specially-formed task force.
[. . .]
They were arrested on charges including public assistance fraud, fraudulent use of a credit card and theft of property, which are felonies. All of those arrested are U.S. citizens, Falls said.

Nevada Man, Who Won Free Buffet For Life, Then Was Banned From the Casino, Kills Himself

M Resort in Henderson, Nevada
(Google Street View)
Maybe it was the food.

[From article]
In his final, angry message to the world, delivered to the newspaper Monday morning, John Noble blamed his suicide on depression that set in after the Henderson resort awarded him free meals at the buffet for life then banned him from the property in 2013 for harassing some of the women working there.
“Today, I end my life due to the M Resort Spa Casino and its employees,” the 53-year-old Noble wrote in one of two suicide notes he included with an obsessively detailed dossier on the people he blamed for destroying his life.
At about 4:50 p.m. Sunday, Noble shot himself in the resort on Las Vegas Boulevard South near St. Rose Parkway. Henderson firefighters were already at the resort’s parking garage extinguishing a burning vehicle police now say belonged to Noble.
[. . .]
Mental health experts say high-profile, public suicides like this one are rare and troubling, because they often receive media coverage that can glamorize self-destructive behavior and lead to copycat deaths.

Food Aid To Refugees Stolen By ISIS

[From article]
And that is where the Strategy Page article gets really interesting. From it:
The UN is criticizing ISIL for marking foreign (mostly UN and mostly paid for by the U.S.) food aid as coming from ISIL. Before ISIL allows food aid to be distributed the boxes and sacks must be marked as a “gift from ISIL”. The UN also criticizes ISIL for selling some food on the market to raise cash. ISIL tells the UN to shut up and be grateful that ISIL allows the food aid in and generally does not abuse UN staff. Currently the UN food aid program feeds about four million Syrians, which is nearly a third of the population still in Syria. Nearly half of those aid recipients are either in ISIL controlled territory or the food must pass through ISIL controlled areas (in which case the food must be marked as from ISIL before allowed to pass).
On one hand the US and its allies are spending a fortune on troops and aircraft to defeat ISIL. The other hand is feeding ISIL, literally. If we stopped sending food into ISIL-controlled areas, ISIL would disappear pretty quickly. Is this too peculiar an idea? Perhaps we are so rich that we can afford to feed people whose most fervent desire is to kill us.

Fierce Grocery Competition

[From article]
This year Kroger, the US's largest supermarket chain, will pass $100bn revenue mark, despite having no presence overseas. This local chain has now enjoyed 43 consecutive quarters of growth. Walmart has taken note and is trying to get back into smaller, urban supermarkets after spending years trying to kill them off.

Thieves Steal Truck Loads of Goods

[From article]
The thieves target mostly shipments of food and beverages, which are easy to sell on the black market and hard to trace. Some end up on the shelves of small grocery stores. Others go to huge distribution warehouses like the one authorities raided in August in North Hollywood, Calif. It was filled with stolen steaks, shrimp, energy drinks, ice cream and other frozen foods.
[. . .]
The most common crime is still the “straight theft” of trailers left unattended in parking lots or at truck stops.

High Cost of Dishonesty

Curious that this essay appeared when it did. In September 2013 I visited the local Farmer's Market which is held on Tuesdays on City land on an overpass near Harvard University's Science Center. I'm a fairly savvy food shopper. I noticed early that the prices at this market were higher than Whole Foods and all of the other markets in the Cambridge area. That includes Stop & Shop, Shaw's (formerly Star Market), Trader Joe's, and DeMoulah's Market Basket. But it is convenient and when I pass by and need one item it is more efficient to shop for the one item than to make a one mile trip to the markets. Their tomatoes taste better unless you purchase organic tomatoes at the markets. But even then the Farmer's market prices are higher. One particular vendor treated me rudely. I ignored it because I did not spend much time or money at his space.

In September I needed tomatoes and saw that his looked ripe enough to eat for my salads and their price was lower than the other vendors. I picked up some at the sign's listed price of $3.50 per pound. He  placed it on his scale. I noticed it was less than a pound. He said the price was $4.00, which I paid without question. I did not want to argue with this man who was rude to me on a few previous occasions. I went home and weighed the tomatoes again. My scale showed about three-fourths of a pound. He had charged me $1.40 over the stated price for one item. I was upset and recognized that this man could not be trusted. Was it only me or was he doing that to others? I did not know but I will never shop at his stall again unless it is an life-or-death emergency.

Perhaps few people who shop at this market have any monetary concerns. Many people at Harvard University, and many Cambridge residents,  own trust funds or are related to wealthy persons and have little need to worry about a few dollars for food each week. Many of the customers at this market are Harvard students. To some of them overpaying is not a problem.

This essay raises the question of why politicians and lawyers who lie so freely are trusted at all? They steal much larger quantities of money each day without using scales.

[From article]
The fact that honesty and trust are so vital should make us rethink just how much tolerance we should have for criminals and dishonest people.

IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS!!!!!

I Just Realized Something

It just hit me!
My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day.
He has his food prepared for him.
His meals are provided at no cost to him.
He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year, if any medical needs arise.
For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him.
He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep.
If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up.
He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep.
He receives these accommodations absolutely free.
He is living like a king, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever.
All of his costs are picked up by others who earn a living.
I was just thinking about all this and suddenly it hit me like a ton of bricks ~
