China on Monday revealed its latest supercomputer, a monolithic system with 10.65 million compute cores built entirely with Chinese microprocessors. This follows a U.S. government decision last year to deny China access to Intel's fastest microprocessors.
There is no U.S.-made system that comes close to the performance of China's new system, the Sunway TaihuLight. Its theoretical peak performance is 124.5 petaflops, according to the latest biannual release today of the world's Top500 supercomputers. It is the first system to exceed 100 petaflops. A petaflop equals one thousand trillion (one quadrillion) sustained floating-point operations per second.
The most important thing about Sunway TaihuLight may be its microprocessors. In the past, China has relied heavily on U.S. microprocessors in building its supercomputing capacity. The world's next fastest system, China's Tianhe-2, which has a peak performance of 54.9 petaflops, uses Intel Xeon processors.
TaihuLight, which is installed at China's National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, uses ShenWei CPUs developed by Jiangnan Computing Research Lab in Wuxi. The operating system is a Linux-based Chinese system called Sunway Raise.

But just over a year ago, in a surprising move, the U.S. banned Intel from supplying Xeon chips to four of China's top supercomputing research centers.
The U.S. initiated this ban because China, it claimed, was using its Tianhe-2 system for nuclear explosive testing activities. The U.S. stopped live nuclear testing in 1992 and now relies on computer simulations. Critics in China suspected the U.S. was acting to slow that nation's supercomputing development efforts.
Four months after the Intel ban, in July 2015, the White House issued an executive order creating a "national strategic computing initiative" with the goal of maintaining an "economic leadership position" in high-performance computing research.

It's not just China that is racing ahead. Japan and Russia have their own development efforts. Europe is building supercomputers using ARM processors, and, similar to China, wants to decrease its dependency on U.S.-made chips.
China's government last week said it plans to build anexascale system by 2020. The U.S. has targeted 2023.
"This is the first time the U.S. has lost the lead," said Dongarra, in the total number of systems on the Top500 list.
China's work is also winning global peer recognition. It's work on TaihuLight has resulted in three submissions selected as finalists for supercomputing's prestigious Gordon Bell Award, named for a pioneer in high-performance computing.
The fastest U.S. supercomputer, number 3 on the Top500 list, is the Titan, a Cray supercomputer at U.S. Dept. of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory with a theoretical peak of about 27 petaflops.

Apple and Samsung supplier Foxconn has reportedly replaced 60,000 factory workers with robots.
One factory has "reduced employee strength from 110,000 to 50,000 thanks to the introduction of robots", a government official told the South China Morning Post.
Xu Yulian, head of publicity for the Kunshan region, added: "More companies are likely to follow suit."
China is investing heavily in a robot workforce.

"We are applying robotics engineering and other innovative manufacturing technologies to replace repetitive tasks previously done by employees, and through training, also enable our employees to focus on higher value-added elements in the manufacturing process, such as research and development, process control and quality control.

Economists have issued dire warnings about how automation will affect the job market, with one report, from consultants Deloitte in partnership with Oxford University, suggesting that 35% of jobs were at risk over the next 20 years.
Former McDonald's chief executive Ed Rensi recently told the US's Fox Business programme a minimum-wage increase to $15 an hour would make companies consider robot workers.
"It's cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who is inefficient, making $15 an hour bagging French fries," he said.

Adidas is relocating some of its shoe production from Asia to the company's homeland — but Germans shouldn't expect a jobs boom.
What is currently done by hand will soon be carried out by robots as part of what the firm calls an "automated revolution."
The sportswear giant unveiled its prototype "Speedfactory" on Tuesday — a 3,000-square-foot, high-tech facility in the southern German town of Ansbach.
The first 500 robot-made high-performance running shoes are scheduled to be rolled out later this year.
"We believe that this is pioneer work for a fully automated production process," Adidas spokesman Jan Runau told NBC News, adding that the facility will mean the firm "will be able to get the desired product to the customer much faster."

Last year, China ran up the largest trade surplus in history, at our expense, $365 billion. We exported $116 billion in goods to China. China exported $482 billion worth of goods to us.
Using Census Bureau statistics, Terry Jeffrey of CNSNEWS.com documents how Beijing has, over decades, looted and carted off the greatest manufacturing base the world had ever seen.
In 1985, China’s trade surplus with us was a paltry $6 million. By 1992, when some of us were being denounced as “protectionists” for raising the issue, the U.S. trade deficit with China had crossed the $10 billion mark.
In 2002, it crossed the $100 billion mark. In 2005, the $200 billion mark. In each of the last four years, Communist China has run an annual trade surplus at the expense of the United States in excess of $300 billion.

Those trade deficits also explain the rise of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.
Yet, with the exception of Trump, none of the GOP candidates seems willing to debate, defend or denounce the policies that eviscerated America — and empowered the People’s Republic.

They are being sold out for the benefit of corporate elites who pay off those politicians with the big cash contributions that keep the parties flush.

Free trade is not a zero-sum game. The losers are the workers whose jobs, factories and futures are shipped abroad, and the dead and dying towns left behind when the manufacturing plants shut down.

Between the Civil War and World War I, under Republicans, the U.S. became the world’s greatest industrial power and a wholly self-sufficient nation. How? We taxed foreign goods entering the United States, but did not tax the profits of U.S. companies or the incomes of U.S. workers.
The difference between economic patriots and globalists who inhabit corporate-funded think tanks and public policy institutes is that the latter think of what is best for their corporate benefactors and the global economy. The former put America and Americans first.

When Chinese scientists announced earlier this year that they had genetically altered “spare” human IVF embryos using Crispr/Cas9 for research purposes, there was deep concern among many who thought that they had gone too far – the US Government later imposed a moratorium on federally-funded research in America.




However, critics of the manipulation of human IVF embryos – even when done for research purposes – have argued that it is a slippery slope to genetically-enhanced “designer babies” that might be engineered with desired traits such as intelligence or athletic ability.
The scientists behind the proposed study in the UK said they have no intention of altering the DNA of future generations but accept that this may at some point in the future be safe, medically justifiably and ethically acceptable – for instance to avoid inherited disorders or to confer disease resistance on IVF babies.

“There are suggestions that the methods could be used to correct genetic defects, to provide disease resistance, or even to introduce novel traits that are not found in humans. However, it is up to society to decide what is acceptable – science will merely inform what may be possible,” she added.
Parliament amended the UK’s IVF legislation in 2008 to allow genetic manipulation of embryos less than 14 days old, provided it was for research purposes and sanctioned by the HFEA. Under the HFE Act 2008, it remains illegal to create GM embryos for implanting into the womb, or to edit the “germline” DNA of chromosomes passed on to future generations.

Chinese Factory Employs 90 Percent Robots Increases Efficiency

In Dongguan City, located in the central Guangdong province of China, a technology company has set up a factory run almost exclusively by robots, and the results are fascinating.
The Changying Precision Technology Company factory in Dongguan has automated production lines that use robotic arms to produce parts for cell phones. The factory also has automated machining equipment, autonomous transport trucks, and other automated equipment in the warehouse.
There are still people working at the factory, though. Three workers check and monitor each production line and there are other employees who monitor a computer control system. Previously, there were 650 employees at the factory. With the new robots, there's now only 60. Luo Weiqiang, general manager of the company, told the People's Daily that the number of employees could drop to 20 in the future.



The robots have produced almost three times as many pieces as were produced before. According to the People's Daily, production per person has increased from 8,000 pieces to 21,000 pieces. That's a 162.5% increase.
The increased production rate hasn't come at the cost of quality either. In fact, quality has improved. Before the robots, the product defect rate was 25%, now it is below 5%.

White House Negligence Enabled Chinese Hackers To Steal Government Employees Personal Information

Chinese hackers obtained all personnel records of U.S. government employees. No one knows what they will do with this information. The misguided White House demanded that all medical records be online using taxpayer funds to encourage medical facilities and professionals to place the information online. In another level of clueless public officials making policy the Cambridge City Council (and other governmental bodies) encouraged Wi-Fi nodes be installed across the city to allow everyone to enjoy access to the internet. There was no discussion of the lack of security of using this new technology. My queries to city officials who are teaching people to use Facebook without explaining how their information is a business went unanswered. Be prepared for any and all of your personal information being available to anyone with evil intent as easily as it is to those with good intentions.

Hackers stole personnel data and Social Security numbers for every federal employee, a government worker union said Thursday, asserting that the cyber theft of U.S. employee information was more damaging than the Obama administration has acknowledged.

The OPM data file contains the records of non-military, non-intelligence executive branch employees, which covers most federal civilian employees but not, for example, members of Congress and their staffs.
The union believes the hackers stole military records and veterans' status information, address, birth date, job and pay history, health insurance, life insurance and pension information; and age, gender and race data

"We believe that Social Security numbers were not encrypted, a cybersecurity failure that is absolutely indefensible and outrageous," Cox said in the letter. The union called the breach "an abysmal failure on the part of the agency to guard data that has been entrusted to it by the federal workforce."
Samuel Schumach, an OPM spokesman, said that "for security reasons, we will not discuss specifics of the information that might have been compromised."
The central personnel data file contains up to 780 separate pieces of information about an employee.

Two Professors and Four Others Charged With Espionage For China

Two Chinese professors, who for years worked as engineers in the USA, are among six Chinese nationals accused by federal prosecutors of economic espionage sponsored by their home government in the alleged theft of radio frequency filter technology developed by two U.S. companies.
The professors, who attended the University of Southern California, allegedly obtained the trade secret information — designed in part to limit interference in mobile phone reception and other devices — as part of a "long-running effort'' to benefit universities and companies controlled by the Chinese government.
Tianjin University professor Hao Zhang, 36, was arrested Saturday in Los Angeles shortly after stepping off a plane from China. Fellow professor Wei Pang, 35, and four other alleged co-conspirators are believed to be in China.

Elvin Pineda, 25, and his pal Luis Fernandez were taking apart an ATM at a TD Bank on Bay and Shore parkways at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday when cops on patrol caught them in the act, said police.
The duo told investigators they had tampered with the machines before and regularly shipped the ATM parts to China to be duplicated and used for skimming devices, according to police.
Pineda told cops he had more skimming equipment in his Coney Island pad, so they went for a look and uncovered several hundred credit cards, laptops, special printers and laminators, police said.
Pineda was charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a forgery device, possession of a forged instrument, possession of a skimmer device, and criminal mischief, cops said.

The report reveals the apprehension numbers ranging from 2010 through July 2014. It shows that most of the human smuggling from Syria and Albania into the U.S. comes through Central America. The report also indicates the routes individuals from North Africa and the Middle East take into the European Union, either to illegally migrate there or as a possible stop in their journey to the United States. The data are broken down further into the specific U.S. border sectors where the apprehensions and contact occurred.
Among the significant revelations are that individuals from nations currently suffering from the world’s largest Ebola outbreak have been caught attempting to sneak across the porous U.S. border into the interior of the United States. At least 71 individuals from the three nations affected by the current Ebola outbreak have either turned themselves in or been caught attempting to illegally enter the U.S. by U.S. authorities between January 2014 and July 2014.

In short, our Icarus-in-Chief, without much foreign-policy experience but with youthful zeal and good intentions, soared far too high for his flimsy waxen wings. Now they are melting, and as the American commander-in-chief careens back to earth, lots of those below are wondering what will come next. Still, there is a lot of irony as Obama freefalls to earth.

Then came the waxen Obama soaring on hope and change, the president who would remake the world along the lines envisioned in a college faculty lounge or a Chicago organizing session. Obama was not a Buchananite isolationist who would be easy for Europeans to caricature. Rather, he is a postmodern, postracial progressive, who deeply felt either that traditional U.S. alliances were not worth the commitment, or that the U.S. was properly moving away from its European heritage and thus without any need for special trans-Atlantic relationships, or that an internationally engaged America came at the expense of dollars better spent on redistributive entitlements at home — or all three and more still.
The result is that the Europeans are increasingly bewildered if not a little anxious. They cannot reduce Obama, a man of the Left, to a caricatured Texan who often misunderstands the world, because Obama is an Ivy Leaguer who has never yet understood it.

Libya, Syria, Egypt, and the general regional turmoil suggest instead that tribalism, religious intolerance, misogyny, anti-Semitism, and authoritarianism were mostly indigenous and did not need British colonists, Russian generals, American oil men, or the Bush family to activate them. To paraphrase Ward Churchill, with the American recessional from the region, the long-awaited Middle East chickens are coming home to roost.
The nosedive of the melting Obama will leave the world a more dangerous place, but also serve as another mythological reminder of why the pretentious without real wings should not try to fly.

Chinese College Student Cares For Injured father and Disabled Mother

Most people could forgive Guo Shijun if he gave up on his dream of a university education: because of his full time commitments to caring for his paralysed father and sick mother, he is spread incredibly thin.
Most people would forgive him, but it is possible Shijun wouldn't forgive himself, as instead of giving up his studies, he persuaded university officials to let his father to stay in his dorm for the full term, after he was paralysed in a building accident.
Shijun still managed to get a place at a top university, and, impressed with his dedication in the face of insurmountable odds, they let him bring his father to university with him to lighten his load.

Slavery Grows In Asia

This summer, an Australian man imprisoned in China reported that prisoners were making headphones for global airlines like Qantas and British Airways. Some 300,000 sets of the disposable headphones were made by uncompensated prisoners who were forced to work without pay and regularly beaten. The index says that there are about 3 million slaves in China, in state-run forced labor camps, at private industrial firms making electronics and designer bags, and in the brick-making industry.

The Chiness Cigarette Thrower

Leaving my apartment on Monday September 16, 2013 at about 3:30 PM to do errands, I saw a group of about 15 Chinese people. At first I thought they were Harvard University students traveling in packs as they are encouraged to do in the dangerous city of Cambridge MA. As I approached the corner two men from the group stopped and were talking. They stood next to a blue USPS mail drop box. One of the men was pointing to it. Was this a special sight for them? Did they not have drop boxes in China?

One of the men was smoking a cigarette. He put the cigarette out, but it still had a lit ash, in the platform of the drop box. Then the other man opened the door to the drop box and the smoker put the still lit cigarette into the mail box. I was shocked, and angry. I am one of those dinosaurs who still send letters and cards to friends and relatives. I use the USPS to deliver my rent check too.

I stopped to ask the man why he did that. As foreigners often do when uncomfortable,  he pretended not to understand. When visitors or illegal aliens are confronted with wrongdoing they pretend they do not speak English. Convenient. It is one of the many reasons why police do not arrest and detain illegal aliens when they are found breaking laws. Citizens? No problem. They are arrested charged and brought to court when they violate the laws. Howie Carr often rants on his show "Just treat me like an illegal alien." He is on to something for sure.



After I told the Chinese visitor what I thought of his putting a cigarette in the drop box, I went on my way. The two men hurried along to catch up to their group. I finished my errands in Harvard Square and went to the main branch of the library to return a book. I saw the group of Chinese visitors in the meeting room in front of the new library building. I returned my book. Then I saw the two men who put the cigarette in the mail box. I was going to leave, but thought I'd ask one of the reference librarians what he thought about the incident. Did he think it was important enough to call the local police?

I waited while he was on the phone answering questions. The group of Chinese visitors came out from the meeting room and was led by no less than the Library Director Susan Flannery. She actually waved at me and said hello. I wondered what was up. Was she planning to have me arrested? I mean, that woman, one of many prominent lesbians in leadership positions in Cambridge, usually shuns me. When I was making a video of the opening of the new library she hid behind others when I tried to capture her image.

So I asked her, "Are you talking to me?" She nodded and smiled. I said "One of your visitors put a lit cigarette into a mail box near my house." She did not respond. One lady who appeared to be the Chinese tour group leader came over to me trying to be friendly. I told her the same thing. I pointed out the two men.

I was still waiting to get the reaction from the reference librarian who was still on the phone. An American woman who was some sort of liaison for the group came over to me and said, "Excuse me. We are doing a tour here." I said "One of your tourists put a lit cigarette into a mail box." 

I added, "We have enough trouble here. We do not need tourists like that." When the librarian got off the phone I asked if I could get his reaction. He was angry and said to me. "No. You can't get my reaction. I am a professional librarian, and can give you information."

I did not know if he was angry with me waiting to talk with him, or if he was just angry at his life situation. I said "You are doing a tour."

He said, "I'm not doing a tour."

I said, "The library is doing a tour. One of the tourists put a lit cigarette into the mail box near my house."

He asked, "Which mail box."   

I said, "The one near my house."

I added, "But since you are a professional librarian, you are unable to answer my question which is not part of your job."

The Chinese lady tour guide tried a second time to apologize for the behavior of one of her tourists. I repeated my thoughts, "We have enough trouble here. We don't need any more." I left the library and went home.

I know why the local police, five crime families, Harvard University campus cops, Communists and  FBI informants take turns harassing me every day. In Cambridge where Harvard University runs the state and local government, laws are optional. It is up to the President and Fellows of Harvard College whether they are to be enforced or not. In this case a Chinese tourist was probably praised for putting a lit cigarette into the mail box. Who uses snail mail these days? Certainly none of the elitists at Harvard University who all have hand held wireless devices.

Moreover the Chinese government is the major creditor nation of the US government which is run by a genius educated at Harvard Law School.  Wouldn't want to create an international incident over a lit cigarette.
