If the rationing board decides to not pay for a particular treatment or drug, patients are out of luck. If the denied treatment is lifesaving, guess what follows? Hence the characterization of these rationing boards as “death panels.” Sarah Palin warned of “death panels” within ObamaCare but as usual was ridiculed by the media. Yet in the UK, their National Health Service (NHS), the model for ObamaCare, just demonstrated another example of their death panels. “Six breast cancer drugs are to be banned from use by NHS patients,” according to the Daily Mail. How’s that for “war on women”?

The IPAB has many options at its disposal, including limiting access to expensive drugs and technology as well as reducing physician fees. The net result is rationed healthcare. And for some, the lack of care will lead to death, hence the characterization as “death panels.”
Medicaid provides a clear example of what happens when physician fees are cut to an extreme degree. Fewer than half of physicians are willing to accept new Medicaid patients according to a recent physician survey. The result is long waits for appointments and procedures. The VA system illustrated the consequences of delayed medical care with 20 patients dying while waiting for treatment at the Phoenix VA hospital.

So what happens when an unelected and unaccountable rationing board decides you can’t receive the lifesaving or extending treatment you need? Instead of the patient and their physician making these decisions, as it should be, the government is doing all of the deciding. Cancer patients in the UK are learning this lesson the hard way.
President Obama nominated Donald Berwick to run Medicare and Medicaid. Dr. Berwick is a big fan of the NHS; “I am a romantic about the NHS; I love it.” Expect to see ObamaCare morph into a version of the NHS as it continues to unfold. Including rationing. Death panels are indeed alive and well.

Drobnic Holan says the most outstanding falsehood of the year was Sarah Palins' reference to "Death Panels." It is clear that like most journalists she lacks awareness of a group of wonderful persons with disabilities called Not Dead Yet. Based in Chicago, the Founder is attorney Diane Coleman.

I first learned of NDY from an article in the Village Voice in 1995. During the Supreme Court of the US hearings on the NY state and Oregon's assisted suicide laws Coleman sent me a copy of her amicus brief. In it I learned about the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

During a protest at a convention of The hemlock Society in Boston I learned more about the concerns of NDY. They point out that many doctors have the opinion of persons with disabilities, "I wouldn't want to live like that." When it comes to assisted suicide many people go through periods of depression when they are susceptible to suggestions by medical professionals. Persons often feel they are a burden on their relatives and friends.

In the Obama-Pelosi-Reid health care bill there is a provision of a government agency which has the power to determine whether a procedure is cost effective. The concerns about death panels applies to elder persons as well as persons with disabilities. Here are some opinions on the health care provision that is referred to as death panel.

It is only a possibility. I'm not suggesting that you do it, just want you to know it can be done. Ahem! Eagan shows her bigotry toward persons with disabilities saying "Too many voters saw too many tin foil hats in Sarah’s camp." Is that a new personal attack or what? Liberals argue: "You're wrong." "You're evil." "You're mentally ill." Suggesting that "tin foil hats" are a sign of mental illness she suggests that those people and who they support should be ignored because, well they wear tin foil hats due to mental illness. Margery Eagan is Clueless about Death Panels


Boston Herald Columnist and Talk Show Host Margery Eagan is clueless about the Death Panels that were in the Obama care proposals. On Wednesday August 19, 2009 she was on her noon to three PM radio show on Boston FM radio WTKK (96.9) discussing Obamacare. She dismissed the death panels as if it was a joke, non existent. Here is what I would have said if I took the time to get through to speak on air.

The reason is that the doctors "would not want to live like that." The person with a disability may be depressed or feel guilty for the extra care and costs to his or her relatives and friends. The provision that was removed was written by members of the former Hemlock Society based in Belmont MA.

Finally the entire Obama health care proposal is a death panel for older persons and persons with disabilities just as Gov. Sarah Palin claimed.

Obama says he will reduce costs and increase care. But he does not provide for increased professionals to provide the increased care. His proposals will require a rationing of health care. The very sick whose care is costly will be denied care so that younger healthier recipients will be able to have health care. That is why older persons recognize that they are the targets for denial of health care. Obama cannot admit this but it is a total death panel for older persons and for persons with disabilities.

How can an educated woman who I admire, dismiss illogically on radio a fact that conflicts with her limited vision? Is this one more example of journalists misleading citizens on public issues? Should this be reported as a fishy statement to the now no longer working snitch email to the White House?

If President Obama wants to better understand why America 's discomfort with end-of-life discussions threatens to derail his health-care reform, he might begin with his own Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He will quickly discover how government bureaucrats are greasing the slippery slope that can start with cost containment but quickly become a systematic denial of care.
Last year, bureaucrats at the VA's National Center for Ethics in Health Care advocated a 52-page end-of-life planning document, "Your Life, Your Choices." It was first published in 1997 and later promoted as the VA's preferred living will throughout its vast network of hospitals and nursing homes. After the Bush White House took a look at how this document was treating complex health and moral issues, the VA suspended its use. Unfortunately, under President Obama, the VA has now resuscitated "Your Life, Your Choices."
Who is the primary author of this workbook? Dr. Robert Pearlman, chief of ethics evaluation for the center, a man who in 1996 advocated for physician-assisted suicide in Vacco v. Quill before the U.S. Supreme Court and is known for his support of health-care rationing.
"Your Life, Your Choices" presents end-of-life choices in a way aimed at steering users toward predetermined conclusions, much like a political "push poll." For example, a worksheet on page 21 lists various scenarios and asks users to then decide whether their own life would be "not worth living."
The circumstances listed include ones common among the elderly and disabled: living in a nursing home, being in a wheelchair and not being able to "shake the blues." There is a section which provocatively asks, "Have you ever heard anyone say, 'If I'm a vegetable, pull the plug'?" There also are guilt-inducing scenarios such as "I can no longer contribute to my family's well being," "I am a severe financial burden on my family" and that the vet's situation "causes severe emotional burden for my family."
When the government can steer vulnerable individuals to conclude for themselves that life is not worth living, who needs a death panel?
One can only imagine a soldier surviving the war in Iraq and returning without all of his limbs only to encounter a veteran's health-care system that seems intent on his surrender.

I was not surprised to learn that the VA panel of experts that sought to update "Your Life, Your Choices" between 2007-2008 did not include any representatives of faith groups or disability rights advocates. And as you might guess, only one organization was listed in the new version as a resource on advance directives: the Hemlock Society (now euphemistically known as "Compassion and Choices").
This hurry-up-and-die message is clear and unconscionable. Worse, a July 2009 VA directive instructs its primary care physicians to raise advance care planning with all VA patients and to refer them to "Your Life, Your Choices." Not just those of advanced age and debilitated condition—all patients. America 's 24 million veterans deserve better.
Many years ago I created an advance care planning document called "Five Wishes" that is today the most widely used living will in America , with 13 million copies in national circulation. Unlike the VA's document, this one does not contain the standard bias to withdraw or withhold medical care. It meets the legal requirements of at least 43 states, and it runs exactly 12 pages.
After a decade of observing end-of-life discussions, I can attest to the great fear that many patients have, particularly those with few family members and financial resources. I lived and worked in an AIDS home in the mid-1980s and saw first-hand how the dying wanted more than health care—they wanted someone to care.
If President Obama is sincere in stating that he is not trying to cut costs by pressuring the disabled to forgo critical care, one good way to show that commitment is to walk two blocks from the Oval Office and pull the plug on "Your Life, Your Choices." He should make sure in the future that VA decisions are guided by values that treat the lives of our veterans as gifts, not burdens.
