A Coast Guardsman accused of ambushing police early this morning and murdering one woman and wounding another was ordered held without bail today after being arraigned on eight charges.
The suspect was identified in court as Adrian Loya, 31. He was sent away immediately for a competency evaluation as is due back in court March 23. The record of his arrest was impounded by the judge.
The two female victims also are members of the Coast Guard, authorities said. Loya had some type of “relationship” with one of them, his lawyer said.
Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said at 2:14 a.m., officers responding to a car “fully engulfed” by flames were fired upon.
“As the firefighters were dealing with that fire and units were responding, the police were alerted to additional 911 calls that were coming in to the station regarding gunshots,” O’Keefe said. “The police proceeded past the fire toward that location where they came under fire. ... It certainly was an ambush of the police officers.”
