Applying Engineering Protocols To Human Activity, and Government

Hehe. Logical argument. But liberals, progressives, do not think logically. They speak propaganda, appealing to emotions. Logical arguments and critical thought can never counter emotional beliefs. It is easier to open a rock than a mind.

[From article]
Why are most engineers politically conservative? The answer is that engineers fail most of the time. In engineering there is a cycle of design, test, test failure, diagnosis, and redesign, until a product is perfected. Failure is the natural state of engineering new devices. Through their repeated failures, competent engineers are forced to become rigorously honest and functionally conservative.
This honesty is notably lacking in the ungrounded wishful thinking of the political left. The great failure of liberals is that they never fail (according to them).
[. . .]
There are three classes of top-down social engineering. Government programs to restructure society is one class. Government laws, regulatory mandates, and court orders to change behavior is a second. The third is liberal social pressure, often with government complicity, to control thought. We call this third method “political correctness.”
[. . .]

America has hundreds of millions of people. Each individual is infinitely complex and unique. Each has desires, intentions and needs that normally are incompatible with any master scheme. And yet, the left has the arrogance to assume that a master planner can engineer a social system that best for all the people -- a “one size fits all” program. There is no way, other than forcing everybody to be identical robots,
[. . .]
Unfortunately, most political Democrats, and many establishment Republicans as well, have been seduced by a lifetime of pro-government experience into believing that top-down, big-government programs are the answer to all ills. It is vanity to think that they are specially chosen to steer everyone’s life.
[. . .]
Of the seven deadly sins, theologians say the most deadly of all was Vanity. The Greeks called it Hubris. We call it Arrogance. All the other deadly sins derived from Vanity. This sin is really at the heart of progressive, or liberal, social engineering programs. One can do no wrong if one’s heart is in the right place -- so liberals believe.
Our Founding Fathers thought otherwise. They realized that no person, or selected group, could anticipate all circumstances. They therefore created a Constitution that allowed for local adaptation within a protective framework -- a framework that inhibits vanity by enlisting contending interests in making the most important decisions.
The American Constitution was designed for a society whereby people manage their own affairs and solve their own problems. Beyond promoting trade among the states, protecting against foreign invasion, and ensuring the rights of property, the Federal Government really has no legitimate role in structuring society. Society was intended to evolve social arrangements on its own within the protective framework of the Constitution. Thus, this progressive idea that government has the right to impose social change is contrary both to the spirit and to the words of the Constitution.
[. . .]

successful complex structures grow organically: Start small, and simple. Find out what works. Try adding features. Edit out those elements that don’t work and build on those that do work. [. . .] Consider computers. Computers today are far different, and vastly more complex, than they were at their beginning. All successful innovations start simple and evolve complexity as discoveries are made about what works and what doesn’t.
[. . .]
many people, including many conservatives, believe that Social Security has been a success. In fact, Social Security is a great, compulsory, Ponzi scheme. But even it, too, started small: merely as insurance against personal catastrophe. It has grown to be a monster that is devouring the national budget and jeopardizing national security. There is no money in its so-called “Trust fund” and it is generally conceded that the program is on the verge of financial failure, the only dispute being when insolvency will occur.
[. . .]
ObamaCare is the contemporary classic. But, what we have not yet seen is all the damage that ObamaCare has in store. Examples of programs where we do see the wreckage are those “Great Society” antipoverty programs initiated by President Johnson. Enough time has passed to validate the early warnings. Senator Daniel Moynihan warned, all the way back in 1965, that liberal poverty policy was leading to disaster: the breakup of families, crime, drug use, wasted lives and all the other horrid consequences that have followed. The liberal community did not listen and, today, we are stuck with the predicted social disaster.

Chilean Engineers Invent "Unstealable" Bicycle

The Yerka is the creation of Cristóbal Cabello, 22 (right), Andrés Roi Eggers, 23 (left) and Juan José Monsalve, 24 (centre)who dropped out of university market their idea.

[From article]
a trio of Chilean engineers say they have found a way to thwart determined thieves with what they claim is the world's first 'unstealable bike.'
The design, called the Yerka, looks like an average bike, but the bottom tube of the frame can be split into two parts and wrapped around a pole.

The world's first 'unstealable bike' goes into production: Chilean engineers create radical bicycle with a self-locking frame
Design, called the Yerka, splits into two parts to lock around a pole
Only way for thieves to steal the bike is to saw it in half, say creators
First 100 bikes sold for $400 (£255) and next 200 sold at $500 (£320)

Iranian-American Environmental Engineer Sues NYU For Employment Bias

Mohammad Karamouz, 61, an award-winning environmental engineering expert who specializes in water resources.

But was their discrimination unlawful? Does he demand to be loved by his colleagues? Meanwhile in Iran, the population chants "Death to America. Death to Jews. Death to Israel." Americans are supposed to be better than terrorist nations. Ahem!

[From article]
Karamouz, who was born in Iran but became a US citizen in 2001, is suing for unspecified damages.
The professor brought his complaint to the state Division of Human Rights but the agency dismissed his case, finding Karamouz violated Labor Department laws regarding meal breaks and pay, and had created a “hostile work environment” for his staff.
“Professor Karamouz’s contract was not renewed because of his own conduct as an employee. Just as with his previous baseless claims, NYU is confident that we will prevail in this meritless case,” spokesman Matt Nagel said.
Karamouz lost his state complaint because he went in without a lawyer and “failed to put forward many of his most persuasive facts,” attorney Vincent White said.

Making The Easy Difficult, Rube Goldberg's Law

Rube Goldberg

[From article]
“The Inventions of Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts” first appeared in the January 26, 1929, issue of Collier’s. “In my cartoons,” Rube noted, “Professor Butts invented elaborate machines to accomplish such Herculean tasks as shining shoes, opening screen doors, keeping moths out of clothes closets, retrieving soap in the bathtub and other innocuous problems. Only, instead of using the scientific elements of the laboratory, I added acrobatic monkeys, dancing mice, chattering false teeth, electric eels, whirling dervishes and other incongruous elements.”
[. . .]
These oblong-shaped satires took on a life of their own. Dr. Seuss acknowledged his colleague’s influence in a cartoon signed “Rube Goldbrick.” In the early 1930s, “Rube Goldberg” entered the Merriam-Webster dictionary as an adjective defined as “accomplishing something simple through complicated means.” Engineering majors in colleges across the country began to sketch their own “Rube Goldberg” inventions.
[. . .]

a 1970 retrospective of Goldbergiana at the Smithsonian Institution. The exhibit, titled Do It the Hard Way, featured drawings, sculpture, writings, and memorabilia, as well as a documentary film about a career that spanned the century.
[. . .]
The New York Timeseditorialized that Goldberg’s “message is a lasting one: Beware of the all-knowing computers, supersonic gadgets and the rest of the hardware. Beware, too, of the proponents who aim to dominate the human element in life.” The Chicago Sun-Times stated that Goldberg’s “fantastically complicated devices to achieve ludicrously simple ends are today more profound commentaries on our times than they were when his mischievous mind first conceived them several generations ago.” Other papers joined the chorus, and then the cartoonists had their say. Karl Hubenthal was typical. In the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, he pictured Goldberg at heaven’s gate. Saint Peter operates it by means of a contraption involving a rabbit, a pistol, a sailboat, a candle, a boiling kettle, a spool, and a length of string.
[. . .]

Theta Tau, the oldest and largest professional engineering fraternity in the U.S., initiated the annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest in 1989. According to the rules, said machine must be constructed of real materials and use at least 20 steps to accomplish its task within two minutes. Past winners include Screw a Light Bulb into a Socket; Toast a Slice of Bread; and Select, Mark, and Cast an Election Ballot. In 1995, the U.S. Postal Service issued a 32-cent stamp, “Rube Goldberg’s Inventions,” featuring the Automatic Napkin Machine, first drawn in 1931.

Gift To Columbia University Mysteriously Disappears

HENRY KRUMB Left university $16 million.

[From article]
Krumb’s gift to Columbia totaled $16 million.
[. . .]

Krumb’s gift was contingent upon Columbia continuing to offer two degrees — engineer of mines and metallurgical engineer.
But in 1998, Columbia essentially did away with its traditional mining courses and replaced them with a program in “earth and environmental engineering.”
The Krumb chair in mining has been vacant for at least two decades. Another endowed chair, the Stanley-Thompson chair in chemical metallurgy, has been empty for about five years.
[. . .]
Krumb’s will specified that if the mining program folded, and the two degrees were not offered, at least half of the endowment should be transferred to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, with some scholarship fund money going to Lenox Hill Hospital.
But it remains a mystery what happened to the Krumb cash.

Humans Are Not Rocket Science

Lowry notices "Obama and his hubristic faith in the wisdom and powers of a technocratic elite." It joins his worship of credentials. Obama is comfortable with the lack of common sense and absence of integrity in his colleagues. Lowry suggests, "liberalism failed to understand that society is not an enormous engineering project." Yet Lowry supports social engineering of the psychiatric industry and the drug companies which promote the idea that drugs merchants should control behavior and speech.
