Cambridge, MA Letter Writer Laments Lack of Maintenance of Water Supply

Cambridge Water Department

"This lack of maintenance and timely repairs is due to simple negligence to look at the bigger issue." Oh? Simple or gross negligence? Is that what the White House did with the health care system and the immigration laws? No need for maintenance. Ignore laws, and issue executive orders. Why consider future effects of misguided political expediency? Why should the water supply be treated any differently? Still wonder why Trump is so popular?

Legionnaire's Disease Outbreak in Bronx, NY

[From article]
Nearly four dozen people have gotten sick amid what the Health Department has described as an "unusual" spike in Legionnaires' disease in the Bronx, officials said Thursday, adding 15 cases to the total authorities gave a day earlier in announcing the deadly outbreak.

Forty-six cases of the disease, a severe, often lethal, form of pneumonia spread through the air, have been reported in the south Bronx since July 10, city officials said Thursday. Two of the 46 patients, a man and a woman in their 50s, have died from the illness; authorities say they had other lung problems as well as Legionnaires'. Their identities have not been released.
Legionnaires' disease is caused by exposure to the bacteria Legionella; in most cases, people are exposed to the bacteria by inhaling contaminated aerosols from cooling towers, hot tubs, showers and faucets or drinking water.

Since the cases are widely dispersed — as in they're not clustered in one or two buildings —authorities do not believe the outbreak is connected to any contaminated drinking water, Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said at a news briefing Thursday.

Drinking Water Polluted By Drugs

[From article]
A report on drinking water carried out by the Environmental Protection Agency has found samples of at least 25 different drugs, including medication to treat heart conditions, in supplies coming out of wastewater treatment plants.
[. . .]
'We're not trying to scare anyone, but we need to know what these chemical compounds will do to the environment and what are the long term effects for humans.'
The study will be published in the Environmental Pollution journal in the New Year.
[. . .]
The drugs find their way into the water system when our bodies release them when we urinate or if old drugs are flushed down the toilet.

Carcinogen in 31 of 35 Cities Water

[From article]
"An analysis of 35 U.S. cities' tap water has found that 31 one of these water sources contain exceedingly high levels of hexavalent chromium, a known carcinogen. The study is the first of its kind ever to be released to the public and comes, fortuitously, as the EPA is deciding whether to set safe drinking standards for hexavalent chromium in our tap water."
