Cambridge City Councilors Send Mixed Messages and Metaphors

Unmentioned is corporations are employing robots or electronic screens instead of paying workers higher wages. How long before robots are elected to the council? Mr. Mazen does not mention higher prices, called inflation, due to higher minimum wages. He sounds almost delusional expecting what the council does to affect national policy. Saying it is a moral issue, speakers do not identify how and why. Is the morality evil for society. businesses and some workers? Councilor Simmons mixes metaphors arguing for more bandwith counter to the net neutrality movement. Has she flipped?

[From article]

[. . .]

“I’ve seen incredible results. Businesses by virtue of raising wages and raising their costs ever so slightly have seen no decrease in business, but increase in revenue,” Mazen said.
[. . .]
seeking to conquer things bigger than just Cambridge, Mazen said. This move can help push the issue at a state and possibly federal level, he said.
[. . .]
During public comment, many residents said this was a moral issue

Mayor Simmons said it’s important to look at how income affects affordable housing and how they are related.

Surveillance Of Everyone Getting Worse

[From article]
Hackers can hit OnStar and Ford SYNC, unlock doors, kill the engine, turn on the car’s microphone, listen to you, and even deactivate the ignition. It’s not science fiction -- live road tests have proven these wireless attacks can work.
Smart phones and Google Glass, the wearable computer that looks like something you’d expect to see on Mr. Spock, provides yet another platform for spying. For years, governments have been able to remotely access computer devices -- whether laptops, desktops, smartphones, or tablets -- and turn on cameras and you’d never know it. That’s easily defeated with a Post-it note slapped over the lens. But with your smart phone or Google Glass, governments theoretically have the ability to remotely turn on and see everything the wearer sees, does, or hears -- and exactly where it’s all happening, using the internal GPS without the user knowing it’s been activated. Are you in your home having a private conversation with your spouse? Not anymore. Imagine you’re in your office working on a sensitive project, or in a board meeting, or perhaps at a doctor’s appointment, or discussing legal issues with your attorney that are supposed to be protected by privilege -- all of that is potentially accessible. Imagine your fate if companies or bad guys accessed this information about you... well, panic, because if they want it, they can get it.
[. . .]

The surveillance state has been expanded not only beyond the borders, but within as well, in ways that people probably never expected. Unmanned aerial vehicles fly along the borders with Canada and Mexico scanning for illegal crossings. In most major cities, there are cameras on every intersection, in police cars, on light poles, and in buildings.
[. . .]
So unless you smear mud on your license plate, you’re never going to be able to drive free of surveillance again -- and that’s just what a local city can do; imagine what a nation is capable of pulling off.
[. . .]

Recall the movie No Country for Old Men when the killer used the captive bolt pistol to execute the first victim on the road by putting it against his forehead and firing it? Imagine how the guy looked right after that bolt hammers into his skull and he’s no longer alive but he doesn’t know he’s dead -- that’s your right to privacy today.

Internet Diminshes Need For Universities

[From article]
The printing press changed the world in a few decades in the 16th century. The internet is even more revolutionary.
Even more so than the press, the internet has evaporated prior means of didactic instruction. The printing press created change, but only the rich could afford to buy one. For less than $100 today, one can get a domain and start a media empire on the web.
[. . .]

Craigslist has done a runaround on newspapers by offering free advertising, thus cutting their revenues. Newsprint is collapsing. Paper after paper has gone broke. The Media Elite are gone.
[. . .]
Anybody with an anti-Israel bent can open up a website. [. . .] The borderline anti-Semitic site Mondoweiss now has the new media's ear. There are more smartphones in the hands of Muslims than Jews available to contest the narrative.
[. . .]

One can self-educate her or himself up to a Masters degree in civil or mechanincal engineering on the internet. Indeed, the only thing truly provided by schools today is a space for lab work. All else can be acquired online at little or no expense.
[. . .]
True, research has to be centralized, but everything up to a bachelor's can be achieved gratis. Entrance to graduate school will be solely by exam, along with a small syllabus of lab courses, and nothing more. To the enterprising student, this can be accomplished with home study, and a year in commercial labs in capacity as a trainee; an arrangement once familiar to medieval guilds,
[. . .]

Academia will soon die out. The relic courses designed only to make work for obsolete professors will no longer be tolerated. The debt, and the social bloat, will have to collapse. Education has now become truly democratized. Only Engineering, the Sciences, and Medical Education will survive -- and these in only an abbreviated form.
[. . .]
This has the advantage of removing the last holdouts of a vestigial intellectual aristocracy which distorts our Republic with claims of expertise, and high salary requirements. However, the downside, as evinced by YouTube reporting, will be the total lack of responsibility.
[. . .]

Academia was the last vestige of medievalism.

Greatest Internet Scam

[From article]
The site claimed 37 million users, which, if true, would be an enormous percentage of America's married population. (That would be roughly half of all married people between the ages of 25 and 55. (Which sounded incredibly implausible.)
And now we know that Ashley Madison's claims were implausible. An investigation of the site's user database found that there were 31 million profiles for men. However, only 20 million male "users" ever bothered to check their Ashley Madison message box even once, and only 11 million male users ever engaged the website's chat function, even once. A lot of people clearly just signed up out of curiosity.
The database also shows that there were 5.5 million women on Ashley Madison-but when reporter Annalee Newitz drilled down into their user profiles, an astonishing number of these women appear to be fakes-that is, dummy accounts created by the Ashley Madison staff to make it look like there was a pool of women looking for action. And by "astonishing," I mean that it looks like the number of real, live women using the site was somewhere between 1,500 and 10,000.
Which suggests that Ashley Madison might have been the greatest internet scam, ever. They suckered a couple million guys into paying a boatload of money to have affairs with women who were nothing more than sockpuppets of Ashley Madison employees.
[. . .]
These were married men looking to have affairs. They were never going to risk public exposure by trying to go after the site for scamming them. It's the online dating equivalent of robbing a drug dealer.

Digital Amnesia Spreading Among Young And Old

The research findings
The results reveal that the ‘Google Effect’ likely extends beyond online
facts to include important personal information.
For many people, particularly younger consumers, connected devices
have become not just the primary source of knowledge, but the
default storage space for their most important personal information,
including contacts and imagesiii. Around half of smartphone-owning
16 to 44 year olds surveyed for the study admit that their phone holds
almost everything they need to know or recall.
The study findings show that the majority of these digital consumers
strongly depend on devices and the Internet as an extension of their
brain; and suggest a direct link between data available at the click of
a button and a failure to commit that data to memory.
Kaspersky Lab has termed this phenomenon Digital Amnesia: the
experience of forgetting information that you trust a digital device to
store and remember for you.
The study found evidence of Digital Amnesia equally among both
men and women and across all age groups. Contrary to general
perception, it is surprisingly prevalent among older respondents.
For example, respondents aged 45 and older are more likely to head
straight for the Internet for the answer to a question, and write the
fact down or choose to forget an online fact once they’ve used it on
the assumption that it will always be out there somewhere. The data is
discussed in more detail below.

White House Wants To Give Away Control of Internet To Censor Nations

[From article]
One of these is the "great Internet giveaway" — Obama's effort to surrender effective control of the World Wide Web to a group of multinational corporate interests and nonprofits (or if that fails, a United Nations bureaucracy).
President Obama's Commerce Department — specifically the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) — wants to take the Web's most essential operational functions and cede them to the "global Internet community." Among these core functions are the resources provided by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which coordinates all of the Internet's globally unique identifiers (domain names, number resources, protocol assignments, etc.). This is literally the nuts and bolts of the web; its essential underlying architecture. Currently, the U.S. Department of Commerce contracts out responsibility for IANA to a Los Angeles-based nonprofit called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
This relationship has secured a free and open Internet for nearly two decades, driving innovation and preventing censorship of content. Why would Obama want to undo that? According to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), a staunch supporter of Internet freedom, the proposed giveaway is yet another attempt by the administration to undermine U.S. sovereignty — in the process, "jeopardizing the freedoms of billions of citizens the world over.
[. . .]
Obama's administration — always on the lookout for ways to circumvent Congress and the Constitution — has rebuked this obligation, claiming "no government property or assets are involved in the contract" with ICANN. Really? The most recent government contract with ICANN clearly states that "all deliverables under this contract become the property of the U.S. government."
That means Obama's intended transfer is subject to federal property laws, which Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) have correctly concluded requires affirmative congressional approval — not Walden's wink-and-nod attempt to surrender the future of the Internet to the likes of China, Russia and North Korea.

Computer Experts Told US Senate in 1998 The Internet Was Not Secure, and Vulnerable to Hacking

Members of L0pht, including, from left, Tan, Kingpin, Weld Pond, Mudge and Brian Oblivion, rented a van for their trip to Washington for their Senate testimony in May 1998.
The hackers outside their hotel on the morning of their testimony: from left, Kingpin, Brian
Oblivion, Weld Pond, Tan, Mudge (kneeling), Space Rogue and Stefan von Neumann.

The video embedded in this article shows the complete inability of government to address its primary function, to protect the citizens and the nation. That is the reason the federal government was created. These seven young men took time to travel to Washington DC to explain to politicians what they knew as fact. Typically politicians ignored these citizens and instead focused on seeking votes and campaign contributions. It is why so many people stopped wasting their time talking to politicians. They never listen.

What makes this even more obscene is the supreme genius in the White House with his degrees from Columbia and Harvard Universities, indicates his destructive goals by forcing a flawed health care system on the nation, that made delivery of health care worse.  Using financial incentives it encourages medical providers to place medical records online. This facilitates obtaining not just personal identifiers for theft of money and identities, but also the medical vulnerabilities of all citizens. What a great idea to make all citizens vulnerable to harm, in the name of good.

[This is part three of three parts of report on internet security or lack thereof. Links to first two parts are embedded at the below link.]
[From article]
The seven young men sitting before some of Capitol Hill’s most powerful lawmakers weren’t graduate students or junior analysts from some think tank. No, Space Rogue, Kingpin, Mudge and the others were hackers who had come from the mysterious environs of cyberspace to deliver a terrifying warning to the world.
Your computers, they told the panel of senators in May 1998, are not safe — not the software, not the hardware, not the networks that link them together. The companies that build these things don’t care, the hackers continued, and they have no reason to care because failure costs them nothing. And the federal government has neither the skill nor the will to do anything about it.
“If you’re looking for computer security, then the Internet is not the place to be,” said Mudge, then 27 and looking like a biblical prophet with long brown hair flowing past his shoulders. The Internet itself, he added, could be taken down “by any of the seven individuals seated before you” with 30 minutes of well-choreographed keystrokes.
The senators — a bipartisan group including John Glenn, Joseph I. Lieberman and Fred D. Thompson — nodded gravely, making clear that they understood the gravity of the situation. “We’re going to have to do something about it,” Thompson said.
What happened instead was a tragedy of missed opportunity, and 17 years later the world is still paying the price in rampant insecurity.

Finding Lost Smart Phones Now Easy, But . . .

Find My Phone
Google has unveiled a new feature that allows users to track down their lost phones whenever they have an internet connection. Simply typing “find my phone” into the search engine will bring up the feature, which shows the handset’s location on a map as well as allowing users to ring it so that it can be found. The update relies on having the latest version of the Google app on the phone, but can be used from any browser.

But then there is this:

Apple wants to track iPhones – even when they’re turned off
The plan, for which Apple was awarded a patent at the end of January, would allow phones to go into a kind of zombie mode – apparently shut off, but actually tracking the phone’s movements. But while the feature might sound like a way of Apple and other governments tracking your location, it will likely make the phones more secure. Apple’s Find My iPhone service allows users to track phones if they’re lost or stolen, allowing them to be traced and found. But at the moment, thieves can simply turn the phones off, stopping the tracking feature.

George Soros, Ford Foundation Fund Campaign for Government Control of Internet, Curbing Free Speech

George Soros

[From article]
Liberal philanthropist George Soros and the Ford Foundation have lavished groups supporting the administration’s “net neutrality” agenda, donating $196 million and landing proponents on the White House staff, according to a new report.
And now, as the Federal Communications Commission nears approving a type of government control over the Internet, the groups are poised to declare victory in the years-long fight, according to the report from MRC Business, an arm of the conservative media watchdog, the Media Research Center.
“The Ford Foundation, which claims to be the second-largest private foundation in the U.S., and Open Society Foundations, founded by far-left billionaire George Soros, have given more than $196 million to pro-net neutrality groups between 2000 and 2013,” said the report, authored by Media Research Center’s Joseph Rossell, and provided to Secrets.
“These left-wing groups not only impacted the public debate and funded top liberal think tanks from the Center for American Progress to Free Press. They also have direct ties to the White House and regulatory agencies. At least five individuals from these groups have ascended to key positions at the White House and FCC,” said the report which included funding details to pro-net neutrality advocates.

Anti-Semitism Growing Online

[From article]
He expressed the fears that Jews hold in Europe, now, because of frequent beatings, vandalism, and attacks on synagogues and Jewish communities. “It is no longer possible to ignore or remain ambiguous, or to act weakly or with leniency against rabid anti-Semitic incitement. Ignorance and violence will not simply go away on their own.”
With an uptick in anti-Semitism, not just in Europe, but also in the United States and throughout the world, concerned leaders are analyzing how to stop these vicious acts against the Jewish People.
[. . .]
According to Israeli Ambassador Gideon Behar, “Every new development in the cyber world is being used to integrate this kind of hate. When we compare it to other forms of racism, it is prevalent on the Internet.”
[. . .]
The propaganda is massive. Articles, caricatures, videos, and photos are aimed at defaming the Jewish race and spreading falsehoods.
According to Behar, the Internet is an important platform, especially for vulnerable school children who are being given tasks by their teachers to find out information.
[. . .]
Behar points out that the interpretation of the First Amendment enables every kind of hate speech and racism.

NYC Sugar Babies Kidnap, Rob 85-Year-old Sugar Daddy

[From article]
The teens, who both have rap sheets, were ordered held without bail in Manhattan Criminal Court, records show.
Paul Aronson’s troubles began on Oct. 1 when he went on the www.seekingarrangement.com web site, which encourages users to “Find Your Sugar Baby.”
It features a bevy of babes from around the country with names like Diamond and Princess and lists their supposed ages and locations.
After taking a liking to Shaina, Aronson invited her to dinner, sources said. She showed up with Shalaine.
Hoping to move from fine dining to forbidden fruit, Aronson took the teens back to his E. 38th St. apartment, the sources said.
There — after a few cocktails — the twins pulled out zipties and relieved him of his dough, officials said.

UK Woman Spends About $10K Shielding Home From Electromagnetic Radiation, Cell Phones, Wifi

[From article]
She shuns computers and mobile phones and has spent £4,000 hiring specialists to cover her house in Shooting Fields in four coats of thick, ray-repelling paint.

“I have a device which helps me to detect how many wireless signals are near and I’m reassured that I will not have unwanted wi-fi guests coming into my home.”
[. . .]
Glynn Hughes, the boss of Block Radiation, which runs websites including wireless- protection.org, thinks research which claims people do not suffer from symptoms of electro-sensitivity do not paint an accurate picture.
And he believes health experts are discouraged into investigating further because the technology industry is a lucrative market for the economy.

Dark Internet

[From article]
It works by bouncing messages around several computers before they reach their final destination. The Tor network — which its founders liken to a series of ‘virtual tunnels’ — has 3,200 volunteers around the world who allow their computers to be used to send these messages.
Once users have downloaded some free software from the Tor website, they are ready to begin surfing — or selling things — with impunity.
Each message that is sent has several layers of encryption which are peeled away like the skins of an onion as it moves from computer to computer.
These reveal the next destination of the communication (which could be a file, web page, message, picture and so on), without showing its content as it is passed along the chain.
This means it is impossible to establish the identities or locations of the people at either end of the chain, or to see what they are talking about, selling, swapping or sharing.
[. . .]
Contrary to what you may imagine, the Tor Project — the body which provides the Tor network — is a highly respected organisation partly funded by Cambridge University, the U.S. State Department, the Swedish government and other organisations campaigning for liberty and free speech.
Based in Massachusetts, the Project is dedicated to electronic privacy and the rights of people to use the internet without being snooped on or tracked by intelligence agencies or companies.
