Hackers can hit OnStar and Ford SYNC, unlock doors, kill the engine, turn on the car’s microphone, listen to you, and even deactivate the ignition. It’s not science fiction -- live road tests have proven these wireless attacks can work.
Smart phones and Google Glass, the wearable computer that looks like something you’d expect to see on Mr. Spock, provides yet another platform for spying. For years, governments have been able to remotely access computer devices -- whether laptops, desktops, smartphones, or tablets -- and turn on cameras and you’d never know it. That’s easily defeated with a Post-it note slapped over the lens. But with your smart phone or Google Glass, governments theoretically have the ability to remotely turn on and see everything the wearer sees, does, or hears -- and exactly where it’s all happening, using the internal GPS without the user knowing it’s been activated. Are you in your home having a private conversation with your spouse? Not anymore. Imagine you’re in your office working on a sensitive project, or in a board meeting, or perhaps at a doctor’s appointment, or discussing legal issues with your attorney that are supposed to be protected by privilege -- all of that is potentially accessible. Imagine your fate if companies or bad guys accessed this information about you... well, panic, because if they want it, they can get it.

The surveillance state has been expanded not only beyond the borders, but within as well, in ways that people probably never expected. Unmanned aerial vehicles fly along the borders with Canada and Mexico scanning for illegal crossings. In most major cities, there are cameras on every intersection, in police cars, on light poles, and in buildings.

So unless you smear mud on your license plate, you’re never going to be able to drive free of surveillance again -- and that’s just what a local city can do; imagine what a nation is capable of pulling off.

Recall the movie No Country for Old Men when the killer used the captive bolt pistol to execute the first victim on the road by putting it against his forehead and firing it? Larry Summers of our National Archives fame was our Treasury Secretary, dead set against it, everybody was set against it, until suddenly -- through Strobe Talbott -- who the Russians let Strobe know that they knew about Monica, Bill Clinton found it within himself to approve the transfer, and what got transferred was 4.6 billion dollars in hard cash that disappeared.

One leading cybersecurity firm, Norse Corp., said Monday it has narrowed its list of suspects to a group of six people — including at least one Sony veteran with the necessary technical background to carry out the attack, according to reports.
The investigation of the Sony hacking by the private companies stands in stark contrast to the finding of the FBI, which said Dec. 19 its probe traced the hacking — which ended up foiling the planned wide release of the Hollywood studio’s “The Interview” — to North Korea.
Kurt Stammberger, senior vice president at Norse, said he used Sony’s leaked human-resources documents and cross-referenced the data with communications on hacker chat rooms and its own network of Web sensors to determine it was not North Korea behind the hack.

The FBI was very clear in its press release about who it believed was responsible for the attack: “The FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions,” they said in their December 19 statement, before adding, “the need to protect sensitive sources and methods precludes us from sharing all of this information”.

The hackers dumped the data. Would a state with a keen understanding of the power of propaganda be so willing to just throw away such a trove of information? The mass dump suggests that whoever did this, their primary motivation was to embarrass Sony Pictures. They wanted to humiliate the company, pure and simple.

Citizen Lab's report provided an unusual level of insight into how the malware operates, showing how devices can be compromised through booby-trapped emails or infected USB sticks, or even pushed onto handsets by a pliant telephone company.

Meanwhile, all of us lost our Fourth Amendment rights to personal privacy.
"The judge," according to The New York Times, "wrote that James Madison 'would be aghast' at the degree of privacy invasion the data sweep represents."

Whether or not you agree with this judge, whom I regard as a hero of the Constitution, it's clear that there would not have been a case to judge had it not been for the "leaks" -- the disclosure of so many other government acts of contempt for our personal privacy -- by Edward Snowden, the former contractor for the NSA.
I've already noted that, depending on the candidates for the presidency in 2016, I may write in Snowden for the Oval Office.
