Human Rights Watch Reveals Thousands Of Disabled Persons Held In Abominable Conditions

Suhananto, 30, sits inside a cage, where he has been locked up in a confined space for a year by his parents because he suffers from mental illness.

[From article]
This is the harrowing Indonesian village where people with mental illnesses are shackled to the floor and locked up in dark, cell-like rooms.
In Sidoharjo, Karangpatihan and Krebet, both adolescents and adults suffer from severe physical retardation, also known as 'Kampung Idiot', which is comparable to Down's Syndrome.
The horrifying images show a 40-year-old woman called Sijum with Down's Syndrome lying immobile on her back as her mother spoon-feeds her, while Saimun, 45, sits on the ground in his house, where his legs have been chained for 20 years by his parents because he suffers from mental illness.
These victims live below the poverty line and many suffer from malnutrition, visual and hearing impairment - but villagers and government officials blame incest, malnutrition and iodine deficiency as the cause for their illness.

Thousands of Indonesians with a mental illness are currently shackled, according to a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report released on Monday.
The 74-page report, 'Living in Hell: Abuses against People with Psychosocial Disabilities in Indonesia' examines how people with mental health conditions often end up chained or locked up in overcrowded and unsanitary institutions.
Chaining up the mentally ill has been illegal in Indonesia for nearly 40 years but remains rife across the country, especially in rural areas where health services are limited and belief in evil spirits prevail, according to HRW.
[. . .]
'Nobody should have to be shackled in Indonesia in 2016 - people told us again and again that it's like living in hell,' Kriti Sharma, disability rights researcher at the group and author of the report, told AFP.
As well as shackling, the report listed a litany of other abuses the mentally ill face in Indonesia - sexual violence, electroshock therapy, and restraint and seclusion in often overcrowded, unsanitary institutions.
There are just 48 mental hospitals in Indonesia, a country of 250 million, most of them in urban areas.
Treatment options are scarce for the millions living in remote regions, leaving desperate families to turn to faith healers in the Muslim-majority nation, some of whom chain up patients.[. . .]
HRW - who interviewed around 150 people for their report, from the mentally ill to health professionals - said there are currently almost 19,000 people in Indonesia who are either shackled or locked up in a confined space, a practice known locally as 'pasung'.
At least 14 million people in Indonesia aged 15 and over are thought to be suffering from some form of mental illness, according to health ministry data.
Shackling of mentally ill people happens across Asia but is particularly common in Indonesia, with studies showing that it is due to poor mental health services in rural areas and a lack of knowledge about suitable treatments.
Families that choose not to send mentally ill relatives to faith healers sometimes take matters into their own hands.

Indonesian Muslims Closing Christian Churches

[From article]

According to Christian Freedom International, a group that helps persecuted believers around the world, being a Christian in Indonesia is getting more difficult.
Said the group’s president, Jim Jacobson: “Religious persecution targeting minority Christians in Indonesia, particularly in West Java, is both systemic and systematic.”
Jacobson conducted a fact-finding mission to Indonesia last month, visiting numerous forcibly closed churches in West Java.

CFI says a radical Islamic group, AGAP, or Aliansi Gerakan Ant Pemurtadan, which translated means Anti-Apostasy Alliance Movement, is responsible for much of the persecution. Christian Freedom International is urging Indonesia’s Muslim government to allow religious freedom and intervene to stop the forced shutdown of churches by AGAP.
[. . .]

I was cleaning up after the 5 p.m. worship service. AGAP came through the doors. These were not our neighbors; they were from the outside. More than 50 of them came into the church, wearing masks and carrying swords and backpacks of stones. I was so afraid.
They were very angry. They were shouting, “Allah Akbar!” I went out to call for help from the neighbors and call the police to come. The police came but did nothing.
The AGAP came in around 10 p.m. They left at 3 a.m. the next morning. They said this is the last time you can worship here. They said we must not worship here again.

US Embassy in Indonesia Celebrates 4th of July in June, For Religious Reasons

I thought that separation of church and state was an extremely important principle to the White House.

[From article]
The United States Embassy enjoyed its annual 4th of July celebration on Thursday, June 4, one month early, in order to respect the upcoming Ramadhan month, which will begin on June 17 and last for one month.
US Ambassador to Indonesia Robert O. Blake and US Ambassador to ASEAN Nina Hachigian presided over the festivities, which involved brass band renditions of the Star-Spangled Banner and the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya.
[. . .]
He added that moving the 4th of July celebrations to June 4 was one done out of respect for the upcoming Ramadhan month, which will last from June 17 to July 17.

The United States declared their independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776.

Muslims Restrict Christmas in US and Indonesia

Christmas in Indonesia

In Indonesia no Christian religious items may be sold, no Christian religious holidays may be celebrated. In America Muslims can stop others from celebrating Christian holidays. Is there something wrong with this picture?

[From article]
Dozens of Islamic extremists of the Sukaharjo District attacked three shops in Solo. The group has forced retailers not to allow employees to wear Christmas symbols or to promote celebrations. The Mayor of Banda Aceh issued a public announcement prohibiting Muslims to attend Christian events.
[. . .]
There are five local hard-line groups behind the raids which took place on the evening of 15 December against the Solo shops that exhibited items relating to Christmas. They are Surakarta's Sharia Council (DSKS), The Islamic Warrior Group of Surakarta (LUIS), Al Ishlah Brigade, the Jemaah Anshorut Tauhid and the Jemaah Ansarus Sharia. The Solo Paragon Lifestlye Mall, the Solo Grand Mall and the Luwes Shop in Kartasura were the targets of the "attention" of the promoters of the Islamic morals.
After bursting into the shops, they imposed a ban on the retailers prohibiting them to wear or display any Christmas item, even if for mere commercial reasons.
