Maria Stephanos Leaves WFXT, Under New Management, Cox Media Group

Maria Stephanos

[From article]
Maria was the last of her kind — an anchor known to everyone in the market, who in fact had a loyal following, a cult of sorts. She came up at the tail end of the “Dream Team” era,
[. . .]
Nowtechnology has taken the “mass” out of “mass media.” It’s not just TV. Newspapers, I regret to say, are shadows of their former selves.
[. . .]
That’s the good news. The bad news is with their audiences splintered, the media’s old formulas no longer work. The suits are afraid to take chances. They don’t want to run off even more of their dwindling audiences. They panic at the thought of doing anything that might make somebody reach for the remote control. They’re playing not to lose, with the usual result. They’re losing.
[. . .]
In 1982, when I had just started working for the old Channel 7, Rupert Murdoch was trying to buy this newspaper. It was a big story. One night all of us who were covering the sale for TV were brought up to Murdoch’s suite at the Long Wharf Marriott to meet him.
Murdoch’s guy introduced me to him by saying, “This was our top columnist, but he just quit to go into TV news.”
Rupert nodded and said to me, “You made the right decision.”
At that moment, yes, it was. But man, am I glad I got out of TV before it was too late.
Maria, I wish you the best and I hope you get to wherever you wish to go. But before you start interviewing, don’t forget that in local TV news, Clairol’s old advertising slogan applies now more than ever.
Blondes really do have more fun.

Carr: Stephanos exit latest nail in local TV news’ coffin
Sunday, September 13, 2015
By: Howie Carr
Boston Herald

[From article]
Stephanos was tight-lipped on her stunning exit from Fox 25 yesterday but her husband, Dale Stephanos, alluded to bad blood between his popular anchor wife and station owner Cox Media Group when he wrote on his Facebook page:
“It’s so rare to find people with real integrity these days. Harder still to find people like that in the media. I’m so proud and happy for my wife today. This took a lot of guts.”
In a press release sent out by the station yesterday afternoon, Stephanos said she was stepping down to “pursue new professional endeavors” and “embark on a new adventure.” She did not specify her next move. Stephanos will
anchor her final newscast tonight at 11 p.m. The station did not name her replacement.
Her departure marks the latest
in an exodus from Channel 25,
after Fox Television Studios traded the Hub station to Cox for two San Francisco stations last October.
Fox 25 GM Gregg Kelley was sent to the West Coast and San Francisco’s KTVU GM Tom Raponi came to Boston. Longtime personality Doug “VB” Goudie, another viewer favorite, parted ways with the station in November.
Morning anchor Sorboni Banerjee left this summer for Florida. Longtime investigative reporter and anchor Mike Beaudet is leaving at the end of the month to become a full-time professor at Northeastern University.[. . .]
Since taking the helm, Cox has hired a bevy of new reporters and invested in new equipment. But unlike the previous management, which had a practice of hiring
local talent, many of the recent hires have come from out of state or other Cox-owned stations, sources said.
The new owners want shorter stories and more of them. They also want to boost the number of stories in communities with the highest number of meters that track TV ratings, sources said.
Yesterday, Raponi hastily
arranged a staff meeting at the Dedham studios to announce Stephanos’ departure. Stephanos and her colleagues became emotional as she talked about the people she has worked with over the years.
“It will definitely be a loss. She’s the heart and soul of that station,” said an industry observer. “That news operation was built around her.”

Heslam: Fox’s Maria Stephanos stuns with exit

Doug "VB" Goudie

[From article]
Before I was hired by Fox 25 for the new morning news show they were launching in 2003, I asked the station general manager, Gregg Kelley, why he wanted to hire me, especially considering I’d never been on TV before.
Gregg looked at me, smiled and said, “That’s exactly why I want to hire you, VB.”
And as we got to talking about the new show — what it was going to be, how we were going to do it — Gregg said, “I’m not exactly sure what it’s going to be, but I know what it’s not going to be. It’s not going to be like every other show. …”
Now part of his thinking was out of necessity: We were going to be new, so we needed to be different. But mostly it was philosophical. Something was missing in TV news, and we thought we could fill that void. We would do long-form live interviews. So long that Gov. Deval Patrick once asked during the interview, “How long is this interview, and did I agree to that?”
We would give our opinions on major stories. (Anchors giving opinions? Can’t get those from a teleprompter. …) And we would have daily viewer feedback. (It never ceases to amaze me what people will say in a tweet, but luckily they did, every day.)
We were different. It doesn’t mean we were better — sometimes our ratings proved that — and it doesn’t mean we were always right (perhaps I didn’t need to be live wearing a Speedo that time), but we were different.
And as I watched Maria Stephanos’ farewell last night on Fox 25, I couldn’t help but feel that as she was leaving that building, “different” was leaving the Boston TV news market, at least for now.
After all, Maria epitomized everything that Fox was — loud, smart, sassy, engaging … not afraid to mix it up, not afraid to laugh at herself and not afraid to give a hug. Or a “VB!!!!!” in that high pitch only Maria can hit when she is outraged!
Combine Maria’s exit with that of Fox 25 investigative reporter Mike Beaudet, and “different” is now taking a dirt nap.

Fox News Reporting Wrong About Fourteenth Amendment

John A. Bingham, author of Fourteenth Amendment

[From article]
Based on the hysterical flailing at Donald Trump — He’s a buffoon! He’s a clown! He calls people names! He’s too conservative! He’s not conservative enough! He won’t give details! His details won’t work! — I gather certain Republicans are determined to drive him from the race.
These same Republicans never object to other candidates who lack traditional presidential resumes — Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain, to name a few. I’m beginning to suspect it’s all about Trump’s opposition to mass immigration from the Third World.
[. . .]
Amid the hysteria, Trump is the only one speaking clearly and logically, while his detractors keep making utter asses of themselves.
By my count — so far — Fiorina, Chris Christie, Rick Perry and the entire Fox News commentariat are unfamiliar with a period of the nation’s history known as “the Civil War.” They seem to believe that the post-Civil War amendments were designed to ensure that the children of illegal aliens would be citizens, “anchor babies,” who can then bring in the whole family.(You wouldn’t want to break up families, would you?)
[. . .]
American Indians were not made citizens until 1924. Lo those 56 years after the ratification of the 14th Amendment, Indians were not American citizens, despite the considered opinion of Judge Napolitano.
Of course it’s easy for legal experts to miss the welter of rulings on Indian citizenship inasmuch as they obtained citizenship in a law perplexingly titled: “THE INDIAN CITIZENSHIP ACT OF 1924.”
Yeah, Trump’s the idiot. Or as Bream said to Napolitano after his completely insane analysis, “I feel smarter just having been in your presence.”
[. . .]
The anchor baby scam was invented 30 years ago by a liberal zealot, Justice William Brennan, who slipped a footnote into a 1982 Supreme Court opinion announcing that the kids born to illegals on U.S. soil are citizens. Fox News is treating Brennan’s crayon scratchings on the Constitution as part of our precious national inheritance.
Judge Richard Posner of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals is America’s most-cited federal judge — and, by the way, no friend to conservatives. In 2003, he wrote a concurrence simply in order to demand that Congress pass a law to stop “awarding citizenship to everyone born in the United States.”
[. . .]
Our history and our Constitution are being perverted for the sole purpose of dumping immigrants on the country to take American jobs. So far, only Donald Trump is defending black history on the issue of the 14th Amendment. Fox News is using black people as a false flag to keep cheap Third World labor flowing.

Republican Party Does Not Like Donald Trump

[From article]
If his Republican opponents will not take down Donald Trump, Fox News will not only show them how it is done. Fox News will do the job for them.
That is the message that came out loud and clear from last Thursday’s debate in Cleveland, which was viewed by the largest cable audience ever to watch a political event — 24 million Americans.
[. . .]
What was wrong here was that it was not his Republican rivals raising these issues or taking on Trump. It was the Fox News “moderators” of what was supposed to be a candidates’ debate. They came into the arena to do to Trump what his GOP rivals have been too timid or reluctant to do.
Chris Wallace and Megyn Kelly came with their oppo research done and attack questions prepared — to sack Trump in the end zone and send him to the locker room on a stretcher.
[. . .]
Yet, what is now clear is that the Republican establishment wants Trump out of this race, and, frustrated at his continuing strong support, is less and less willing to wait for him to implode.
[. . .]
Thus far in this presidential season, the rise of the Republican outsiders, insurgents, nonpoliticians and anti-politicians reveals how far the people of the United States are estranged and alienated from their political leadership.
[. . .]
we have seen the rise of outsider-insurgent Socialist Bernie Sanders
[Buchanan appears to ignore the fact that Sanders is a U.S. Senator, a socialist, independent, he says, but nonetheless a member of the establishment.]

South Carolina Politician Blames Fox News For Mass Murder, Does Not Explain His Irrational Comment.

After every mass murder, misguided politicians, and journalists begin the blame game. Here a South Carolina state Rep. blames Fox News. Others blame guns. Still others blame mental illness. Few blame psychiatric drugs which has a causal connection to violence. Fewer still blame evil. Flip Wilson used to defend his character Geraldine after she bought an outrageous dress saying, "The devil made me do it." Then there was the Twinkie defense.

[From article]
On his Thursday “The O’Reilly Factor” program, host Bill O’Reilly took on South Carolina state Rep. Todd Rutherford (D-Columbia), who also serves as his House’s minority leader, for his comments earlier in the day broadcasted on CNN blaming the Fox News Channel for Wednesday’s deadly shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC.
“You said this Roof kid watches Fox News,” O’Reilly said. “Do you know that he watches Fox News?”
Rutherford downplayed the accusation and said that he said he watches things “like” Fox News.

O’REILLY HITS BACK AT SC DEM REP BLAMING FOX NEWS FOR SC SHOOTING

Bill O'Reilly To Todd Rutherford Fox News Justifies Brutal Crimes Against Black Americans? todd Rutherford appeared on Fox News tonight, and Bill O’Reilly confronted him about those “disturbing” remarks. Rutherford stood by them and said there are a lot of black people disturbed by a lot of what Fox coers. O’Reilly really challenged Rutherford on what he’s talking about, who on Fox says what he thinks they say, and whether he’s honestly “equating what Dylann Roof did in that church to our commentary.”
Rutherford said that Fox is in the business of demonizing President Obama, playing up race issues in a negative way, and raising the birther issue. O’Reilly scolded Rutherford and said his friend the late reverend would not have “embraced that kind of rhetoric today.”
Watch the video below, via Fox News:Todd Rutherford, a South Carolina state legislator and a friend of one of the victims, spoke out on bill o'reilly on fox news about how “the rhetoric in South Carolina, the rhetoric nationwide, has led people to believe… that it’s okay to walk into a church and take nine lives.”
Rutherford spoke to bill o'reilly about the Charleston church shooting and the death of his friend Reverend Clementa Pinckney.
He said that South Carolina is part of the problem because there’s no hate crimes law and the Confederate flag flies at the capitol. Rutherford referred to networks using “coded language” before calling out one network in particular: “[The gunman] hears that because he watches the news and he watches things like Fox News, where they talk about things that they call news, but they’re really not. They use that coded language, they use hate speech, they talk about the president as if he’s not the president, they talk about churchgoers that they’re not really churchgoers. And that’s what this young man acted on. That’s why you can walk into a church and treat people like animals when they’re really human beings.”

Milwaukee Sheriff Warns Civilians About Al Sharpton

Fox News' Megyn Kelly with Sheriff David A. Clarke, Jr., Milwaukee County, Wisconsin

[From article]
"Al Sharpton's a cartoon. I don't know why the media continues to put a camera and a microphone in front of his face," Clarke said. "He doesn’t believe a word of what he said today – neither does anybody else."
Clarke said that Sharpton propagates violence and hate, and it's time for America to turn away from him and other cop-haters.
"I would question the judgment of anybody in the United States of America that would hold counsel or take advice from Al Sharpton," he said.

Winter soon broke an exclusive story revealing that, prior to the shooting, Holmes had sent a package to a University of Colorado psychiatrist that included a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people," according to one of Winter’s sources. Her July 25 article on FoxNews.com also reported that the notebook contained illustrations of a massacre, including drawings of gun-wielding stick figures shooting other stick figures.
The package, sent to Dr. Lynne Fenton, is now in the hands of Holmes' defense attorneys,

Fox 25 News, Northeastern University Academic Express Hatred of Persons With Disability

Fox News in Boston Exhibits Irrational, Hateful Opinions on Disabled Persons

On July 20, 2012 Fox 25, WFXT-TV Ten O'Clock news Mr. Jack Levin appeared and discussed with Mark Ockerbloom, the shootings in Aurora Colorado. Levin said,"The shooter, James Holmes may have a long history of mental illness." He suggests if Holmes did have a history it would explain why he shot the theater patrons. Oh? And on what evidence does Mr. Levin base this hatred of persons with disabilities? Are all persons accused of mental illness violent? Clearly Levin is clueless about any statistics. Perhaps he is a paid lobbyist for the drug companies or their puppets the psychiatric industry. He shares the hateful attitude of the drug companies and their lobbyist NAMI which promotes forced drug treatment. It is all about the Benjamins not about reason or evidence.

Rational arguments are not a requirement for journalists. Mr. Ockerbloom and Mr. Levin seem to lack awareness of statistics and reason regarding disabilities and violence. Who are more dangerous and violent? Normal persons or persons with disabilities? Why does Fox News anchors continue to demonize persons with disabilities as if they are all dangerous? Why bash them and stay silent when an academic bigot expresses his own hatred?

It is easier to open a rock than a mind. For more than ten years I wrote to and spoke with on air anchors, and interns who share Levin's bigoted view. Homosexuals call it hate speech, of persons with disabilities. Most of the men and women I spoke with have left Fox 25 news and a new crew brings with them their misguided notion of disability. How long will it take for these alleged enlightened but misinformed or uninformed journalists broadcast their nonsense?

Another Journalist Fired for Reporting Facts

COMCAST is not a government agency. The First Amendment does not aplly to their actions. Nonetheless what is alleged regarding powerful media personalities and corporations is true. But the conclusion that this type of cesnsorship is limited to "right wing" organizations is ludicrous. ABC affiliate WJLA (DC) fired reporter Doug McElway for reporting facts about Obama. Censorship is not limited by political persuation. It is pervasive among control freaks and spineless political and corporate leaders.

[From article]
"Josh Silver of Free Press points out that all Nolan did was distribute fliers containing O'Reilly's own words. For his own part, Noland notes the irony in the fact that he got fired for saying "demonstrably true things in a roomful of news people." After all, O'Reilly's quotes are a matter of record. But beyond that, the case of Barry Nolan vs. Bill O'Reilly is about something more troubling: a powerful media figure using influence to crush someone lower on the totem pole, simply because he didn't like what that person had to say. It demonstrates O'Reilly's contempt for the First Amendment freedom of speech -- the same freedom O'Reilly himself regularly exercises, and profits from, through his television show."
