Destroying Blight, Brought On Homelessness
NYPD Commissioner appears to forget the closing of the "flophouses" under the misguided goal of cleaning up blighted neighborhoods. Before the cleanup, alcoholic homeless persons were able to get enough to pay for a night off the streets. When the cheap overnight housing units were destroyed there was no place to stay. These people ended up on the streets of the cities and towns. Blaming de-institutionaization is a diversion for the benefit of the psychiatric industry and the pharmaceutical corporations in partnership with the human services industrial complex (MA State Rep. Marie Parente's term). Here again the Police Commissioner blames mental illness for the problem. What about housing as a solution? Ever think of that Mr. Bratton?
[From article]
There have been two attacks by homeless people in recent days. One of them involved a 72 year-old architect waiting at a corner, stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors by a homeless woman.
The other attack was on a tourist leaving his Grand Central hotel. He was clubbed in the face by a homeless man.
