Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions told The Daily Caller Tuesday that city officials that defy federal immigration laws could be charged with crime for not informing officials about felons the city is harboring.
“I guess you could make it a crime. I’m not aware that it is a crime, but they could be charged. There may be something in the code. To me, it’s just unthinkable — as United States attorney I had a bunch of cities and every day holds are filed. So many criminals have committed crimes in multiple jurisdictions,” Sessions said.
Sessions remarks comes on the heels of the shooting of Kathryn Steinle, a 32-year-old who died last Wednesday after a five-time deported Mexican national, Francisco Sanchez, fatally shot Steinle in San Francisco.
San Francisco, known for its decades-old sanctuary city status, only allows holds on felons with violent records. Sanchez, according to local reports had multiple felonies but no major violent crime convictions in recent years.

Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, was testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday about the dangers of “sanctuary city” policies.
When Gutierrez took the floor he accused Vaughan of not being informed and said she was “exploiting” the murder of Kate Steinle, the young woman who was murdered by a 5-time-deported illegal criminal, to make a buck.
Vaughan had angered Gutierrez by repeatedly referencing a remark he had made about Steinle’s murder. Gutierrez had told Telemundo during an interview on July 16 (emphasis added), “Every time a little thing like this happens, [Republicans] use the most extreme example to say it must be eliminated.”
[. . .]
“Apparently people have decided to besmirch people’s reputation, and take their words, and exploit the death of a beautiful young American woman… But don’t exploit a young woman’s death in order to receive a paycheck to put food on your table,” Gutierrez said.
“You should find a more decent and practical way about going about your living,” he shouted.
What an ironic thing to hear from the mouth of a career politician from Illinois.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) referred to the death of Kate Steinle as a “little thing” on Telemundo on Saturday.
Gutierrez, during a report on the debate over sanctuary cities after the death of Kate Steinle, first flagged and translated by Newsbusters, said, “Every time a little thing like this happens, they use the most extreme example to say it must be eliminated.”

A federal agency says a man suspected in the shooting death of a woman at a busy San Francisco tourist destination has seven felony convictions and has been deported five times, most recently in 2009.
Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Friday that her agency turned Francisco Sanchez over to San Francisco police in March on an outstanding drug warrant.
Officers arrested Sanchez in the slaying of Kathryn Steinle about an hour after it occurred Thursday at Pier 14.
Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said Thursday that Sanchez was on probation for an unspecified conviction.

The San Francisco Chronicle described Steinle’s last moments in heartbreaking detail:
“She fought for her life,” [Liz] Sullivan said, adding that her daughter’s heart had stopped two times, and was restarted, in the ambulance.
“It was a battle, but she just didn’t make it,” she said. “It was horrific, but we knew the minute they came to talk to us, it wasn’t good. But it was so nice to go in and be with her.”
Sullivan said that in their final moments together, she softly touched her daughter’s face — a face she used to paint when the young woman was a little girl.
“We have deep faith,” Jim Steinle said, adding, “Our faith isn’t to the point where we’re ready to forgive.”
