Civil Rights Violation
Civil Rights Violation
Reacting to the killing of a man with an alleged history of
mental illness by New York City police using a TASER, the psychiatric
industry leaps at the opportunity to increase its power and
business. (Reuven Blau, "'Mental' adjustment," New York Post,
September 28, 2008)
Psychiatrists want more coordination between police and "mental health
experts." How is this not a violation of the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1990, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and state anti
discrimination laws? Why do police coordinate how they treat
persons with disabilities? Why do police enforce only these
questionable diagnoses? Why do police ignore diagnoses of broken legs
and rashes?
They want to exclude persons with disabilities from the
protections of privacy laws which protects the medical records of all
other persons. They want to create a data base of all persons
alleged to be "mentally ill." Why silent reactions to
these proposed abuses of the rights of persons with disabilities? If
the same regulations were proposed for homosexuals, women, illegal
aliens and/or black persons there would be outrage from politicians,
journalists and civil rights activists.
