Free Spirited Clinton Foundation

[From article]
The Clinton Global Initiative articles of incorporation state that its purposes are "exclusively charitable," yet Bill used the CGI to steer a $2 million donation to a private company with ties to his close friend and neighbor, Julie Tauber McMahon.
[. . .]
The articles of incorporation for the CGI provide in Article VII as follows:
The purposes for which the corporation is established are exclusively charitable, as specified in Ark. Code Ann, § 4-33-201, and shall include engaging governmental, corporate, and non-profit leaders, as wel1 as college students and on-line participants, in the development of concrete and measurable commitments to action to address some of the world's most pressing challenges.
The management of CGI included some Wall Street alumni: the CEO was Robert S. Harrison, a former partner and Managing Director at Goldman Sachs (which paid Hillary $675,000 in speaking fees)
[. . .]
The purpose of the CGI was to bring like-minded people together to solve global problems and they did so at lavish, splashy meetings. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, at a 2010 meeting in New York, Bill Clinton arranged for a "commitment" by Kim Samuel, a philanthropist and owner of the Samuel Companies, to invest $2 million in Energy Pioneer Solutions, a private company. While the CGI did not make the investment itself, it did pay substantial sums for the venue to close the deal. This alone should raise eyebrows since a tax-exempt charity is facilitating an investment in a for-profit company, which in this case was clearly in violation of the CGI articles of incorporation. The kicker is that one of the major investors in this company was Ms. McMahon who is Bill's neighbor, a frequent visitor and by some accounts, his mistress.
[. . .]
It is not clear if the FBI probe has looked into this episode of the long running Clinton soap opera, but there appears to be plenty to investigate about Bill and Hillary.

Wounded Warrior Project Executives Replaced Due to Wasting Funds

[From article]
The two top executives of the Wounded Warrior Project — among the largest veterans charities in the country — were fired Thursday after an investigation into accusations of lavish spending on parties, hotel and travel, according to a statement released on behalf of the embattled organization.
Wounded Warrior Project's CEO, Steven Nardizzi, and COO, Al Giordano, were fired by the charity's board amid criticisms about how it spent more than $800 million in donations over the last four years. The development was confirmed by Abernathy MacGregor, a public relations firm hired to represent the veterans charity.
[. . .]
The charity came under fire after an earlier CBS News investigation in January revealed large amounts of spending on administration, meetings, and travel.
Nonprofit watchdog “Charity Navigator” says Wounded Warrior Project spends just 60 percent of its budget on veterans. The Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation provides more than 98 percent to veterans. Charity Navigator also assessed that Wounded Warrior’s total revenue for 2014 was well over $340 million.
[. . .]
Going to a nice fancy restaurant is not team building. Staying at a lavish hotel at the beach here in Jacksonville, and requiring staff that lives in the area to stay at the hotel is not team building," Army Staff Sergeant Erick Millette, who returned from Iraq in 2006 with a bronze star and a purple heart, told CBS News.
According to the charity's tax forms obtained by CBS News, spending on conferences and meetings went from $1.7 million in 2010, to $26 million in 2014, which is the same amount the group spends on combat stress recovery.
Two former employees, who were so fearful of retaliation they asked that CBS News not show their faces on camera, said spending has skyrocketed since Steven Nardizzi took over as CEO in 2009, pointing to the 2014 annual meeting at a luxury resort in Colorado Springs.

Celebrity Charities Need Scrutiny

"How did I get involved in the galas?" says Eva Longoria. "They asked me, I said yes." Here, Longoria is flanked by Maria Bravo (left) and a pregnant Alina Peralta (right) on May 12, 2014, at the Global Gift Gala at the Four Seasons Hotel in Paris.

[From article]
With admirable results, the well-liked Longoria has leveraged her wealth (Forbes ranked her as primetime's fourth top-earning woman in 2011, with an estimated annual income of $12 million) and profile for greater good. She has become known in recent years for her highly publicized work in liberal politics and immigration, emerging as a key voice on immigrant rights and campaigning against Arizona's show-your-papers bill, SB 1070, as well as for President Obama's re-election, during which time she became one of his top bundlers and eventually spoke at the Democratic National Convention. Longoria's altruism has, along with her glamour, fame and political advocacy, earned her near-saint status in the Spanish-speaking world.
[. . .]
But while Bravo and Peralta claim that "100 percent"of the money that came into the foundation in 2014 went to "philanthropic projects," when asked by THR for substantiation of where the money from auction donations and ticket sales for the Dubai event (a number that appears to exceed $500,000) went, Bravo turned over a spreadsheet that documented $166,883 donated to two Dubai charities. Where is the rest of the money?
[. . .]
the celebrity-affiliated charity undercut by its lack of attention to detail. (Madonna's Raising Malawi board members misusing $3.8 million earmarked for a girls' school under her watch and Wyclef Jean's camp's decision to divert $100,000 of his Yele Haiti Foundation funds to pay for his performance at a benefit concert he organized are two examples cited by philanthropy experts.)
[. . .]
News reports and press releases indicate that Bravo and Peralta have helped raise $19.5 million since 2009; the two women stand by this figure. In their spreadsheet, the duo claim that exactly $17,739,205 was raised after promotional revenue (which covers event costs) was deducted — meaning that total claimed overhead for all the events they ever put on was less than $2 million.

Charities Make Money Disappear

I've asked that question for many months. It's a reason I am reluctant to give money after disasters when there is no accountability for the money. Too much money disappears with charities.

Charities for Politicians?

Charities for Politicians?

According to this story (below) the New England Foundation for the Arts, a
tax exempt corporation, held a fund raiser for Deval Patrick saying they only
rented their facilities and did not endorse him. They planned to do it again for
a state senate candidate.

Ross fundraisers might not fly with Feds

Cambridge -
Forget whether or not they’re well attended.

A pair of campaign fundraisers state Senate candidate Jeff Ross has scheduled at
the New England Foundation for the Arts may not even be legal.

On his Web site, as late as Monday afternoon, Ross has two fundraisers scheduled
at the foundation’s Boston office in the next eight days, one on Aug. 7 and
another on Aug. 13. Federal law prohibits non-profit organizations from
participating or intervening in any political campaign on behalf of any
candidate for public office. NEFA is a tax-exempt non-profit that operates with
funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New England state arts
agencies, and from corporations, foundations and individuals.

According to a spokesman for the state’s Office of Campaign and Political
Finance, the situation may be more damaging to the foundation than it would be
to Ross.

“There’s no problem with a non-profit hosting a fundraiser for a candidate as
far as we’re concerned,” said spokesman Dennis Kennedy. “It’s rare to see it
happen, because of the implication of their tax status.”
