Austin, Texas Votes To Require Fingerprinting of Uber, Lyft Drivers

[From article]
Ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft are set to quit the Texas city of Austin after voters said fingerprinting should be part of driver background checks, reports said.
The companies had poured $8.6 million into a campaign to keep fingerprinting, which can be expensive and time-consuming, out of driver checks.
Results from the vote on Proposition One -- the most expensive campaign in city history -- showed 56 percent in favor of fingerprint checks, compared 44 percent against, according to the Austin American-Statesman newspaper.

The vote came after the City Council passed an ordinance in December that, among other rules for ride-sharing companies, required their drivers to undergo fingerprint-based background checks by February 1, 2017.
Uber and Lyft announced after the results of Saturday's vote that they were set to suspend operations in Austin, the capital city of Texas, on Monday morning.
"Disappointment does not begin to describe how we feel about shutting down operations in Austin," Uber Austin general manager Chris Nakutis said in a statement.
"We hope the City Council will reconsider their ordinance so we can work together to make the streets of Austin a safer place for everyone."
Lyft added in its own statement: "We're very disappointed to leave the Lyft Austin community -- and we hope to come back soon. If you'd like to help make Austin rideshare-friendly again, reach out to your City Council member and tell them."
Currently, New York and Houston are the only US cities that require fingerprinting for ride-sharing drivers, media reports said.

Uber has threatened to pull out of Houston if fingerprinting rules aren't changed, saying they hamper driver recruitment.
Business is booming for ride-sharing companies but they face tricky regulatory issues in cities around the world.
They are up against stiff resistance from traditional taxi drivers, as well as bans in some places over safety concerns and questions over legal issues, including taxes.
On Wednesday, San Francisco-based Uber announced a policy board that includes a former European Commission vice president to help the company overcome regulatory and other hurdles.

Illegal Aliens Use Multiple Identities

Ramon Aguasviva-Mejia

[From article]
At least 14 aliases — that’s how many names the Illegal Alien of the Week goes by.
At various times, the accused Dominican drug dealer arrested Monday in Dracut has also given
seven different dates of birth.
As of yesterday afternoon, no EBT cards had been discovered, but the over-under on him is three — the same as his number of fake Social Security numbers.
The name on his ICE detainer is Ramon
Aguasviva-Mejia, and he’s being held on $1 million cash bail.
Eventually he’ll be handed over to the feds, and they’ll deport him — for at least the second time. He’s wanted in the Dominican Republic for murdering a cop in 2013, and wounding two others.
He allegedly shot the cops in the back as they tried to arrest his brother. The dead cop’s father was reportedly the top guy in the Dominican’s version of the DEA, and was himself murdered two weeks ago by drug dealers.
So the Dominican cops want him back bad.
Too bad we didn’t want him nearly as badly.
The Boston cops had him on multiple warrants for cocaine distribution, although the DA’s office was having problems finding them yesterday. That’s how long this 60-year-old illegal has been running amok.
In Quincy there was a warrant out for assault. In Lowell Monday he attempted to escape from the cops, and when he was finally arrested at gunpoint on Route 110, the
police say they found crack cocaine.
Ramon is also charged with driving without a license. Try not to let this destroy your faith in the Immigration Reform Act of 1965.
[. . .]
Hillary Clinton has promised never to call an illegal an illegal again. I guess because technically, it is not illegal to be illegal in Massachusetts.
Right, Marsha Coakley?
So how do you describe these invaders? Some moonbats say “undocumented worker,” even though few of these Third World criminals actually work.
This bum is 60, but I’m sure Obama thinks of him as a “Dreamer.”
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has taken to calling these thugs “aspiring Americans.”

Self Identification Leads to Weird Results

[From article]
Orwell imagined only a dystopia in which people could retroactively be made unpersons, but now we can retroactively change the facts of birth.

This level of madness portends the destruction of our civilization, and coincidentally or not, we face a certain percentage (one? five? twenty? who knows?) of a global population of roughly two billion that is dedicated to seeing that happen.

Supreme Court: Identity Has More Rights Than Persons

[From article]
in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges, they created an entity that doesn’t really exist. In a ruling largely devoid of actual legal reasoning, Justice Kennedy cobbled together his own sympathies, leftist social ideations, flowery rhetoric, pop culture and as Justice Scalia put it, the nonsense of a fortune cookie, to create a new entity that now shares constitutional rights with people -- identity. What is identity?
[. . .]
But according to the Court, being gay is not a belief, it is an “identity,” expression of which is a “liberty” under the constitution. In “identity” Justice Kennedy created a constitutionally protected kind of person, impossible to either define, or effectively limit. The clash between gays and religious people is a fight between mere beliefs (ephemeral) and “identity people” (that is people with chosen identities -- which is really just belief but never mind.) Beliefs can’t win against “identity people” with rights (which are really only beliefs masquerading as rights.) People always win over beliefs.
[. . .]
So claim your identity now, because your rights as a non-identity person are not likely to last.

Two men have been charged with murder in the shooting of a woman at a Burlington hotel.
Just before 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Burlington police received a 911 call from the front desk of the Extended Stay America hotel near the Burlington Mall. Guests reported hearing a woman's screams, and what sounded like gunshots inside the hotel, according to the Middlesex district attorney's office.
Officers arrived at the hotel and conducted a room-to-room search, ultimately finding 34-year-old Sanisha Johnson of Brooklyn dead in guest room 118. She suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
Both 24-year-old Epshod Jeune of Burlington and 21-year-old Derrell Fisher of Roxbury were charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.

NYC Illegal Alien ID Card Law Has Delete Clause In Case Conservatives Get Elected

The city's new ID program allows for personal data to be destroyed at the end of 2016 in case a conservative Republican is elected president, the law's co-sponsor told The Post.

The city’s new municipal ID program allows for personal info provided by applicants to be destroyed at the end of 2016, in case a conservative Republican wins the White House and demands the data, the law’s co-sponsor told The Post on Monday.
City Councilman Carlos Menchaca (D-Brooklyn) said the measure was crafted so data submitted by those seeking the cards can be destroyed on Dec. 31, 2016.
The cards are aimed at undocumented immigrants.
“In case a Tea Party Republican comes into office and says, ‘We want all of the data from all of the municipal ID programs in the country,’ we’re going to take the data,” he explained.
[. . .]
In order to get an ID, residents must provide their names, addresses, aliases, dates of birth and other information, making it easy for the feds to identify undocumented immigrants.
Menchaca said the Obama administration has shown no interest in going after the data, but he didn’t want to take any chances on the next administration.
[. . .]
The cards were first available early last month. Demand has been overwhelming, with more than 200,000 appointments made for the cards in less than a month.

A former DMV clerk, Maria Cavallaro, and her accomplice, Jose Calderon, pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to helping roughly 300 individuals "most of them illegal immigrants" to obtain Virginia-issued "driver's licenses, learner's permits and identification cards for those... [who] were not eligible for them," Washington Post staffer Matt Zapotosky reported in the November 7 paper.

"As part of the reinvention of the Department of Homeland Security to serve as a tool of political repression, the Federal Protective Service is used by the DHS to track the political activities of peaceful advocacy groups. The FPS was seen arresting photographers in Portland last November during an OWS rally.
In 2004, the FPS arrested a veteran for the crime of complaining to his local VA office in Des Moines."
