George Perrot, 48
[From article]
George Perrot became a free man yesterday, after spending nearly three quarters of his 48 years in jail for a crime he did not commit.
[. . .]
After hearing from a state prosecutor and a pair of defense lawyers, who took up Perrot’s case as part
of an Innocence Project crusade, Kane took a 15-minute break before rendering a decision on bail that was actually an eloquent and stinging rebuke of the system that conspired to throw an 18-year-old kid in jail for the rest of his life.
[. . .]
“As previously stated, the court after a rigorous review of the entire
record of this case has come to be reasonably sure that George Perrot did not physically or sexually
assault Mary Prekop.
“That finding bears heavily on the determination that the commonwealth’s case will fail to secure a conviction.”
[. . .]
After lifting his mother
over a puddle outside
the courthouse yesterday, George Perrot was asked what he wanted people to know about him.
“They don’t need to know anything about me,” he said.
“I’m free.”
