Doctors weren't sure if twins Emmett and Owen Ezell would survive after the conjoined siblings were separated before their first birthday.
Nearly three years later, the boys are thriving and happily hitting childhood milestones.
The boys no longer need help to breathe and have had tracheotomy tubes removed from their neck.
Their mother, Jenni Ezell, who is a speech therapist, said this has been instrumental in helping the boys develop and now they are working on their next big step: talking.
'It seems like they're not getting as sick as often and they're starting to vocalize a lot more, which is a lot of fun.
'They say, "Mama, mama", and I've heard them do the, "Dada, dada",' she told NBC 5.
Jenny said her sons' delayed development can sometimes upset her, but she's extremely excited by the progress they've made.
'As a speech therapist I am very frustrated because I feel like they should be talking and doing so many things, but as a mom, they have come so far, seeing where they started,' she said.
Three years ago this March, Jenni and her husband Dave were told they were having conjoined twins.
She said she never expected to get this far with her twin boys, who are big brothers to sister Ella Rae Harper Ezell.
'I didn't know they'd do this well.
'I always hoped, but I didn't know for sure.
'So being where we are now is a really good feeling,' she said.
The boys have speech and occupational therapy every day and still have round-the-clock care.
Two nurses live at the Ezell home and feed Owen and Emmett through tubes in their stomachs.
'They still take medicine in the mornings and evenings, and they get breathing treatments.
'We don't have any major medical procedures or anything coming up. It's kind of a breather,' Jenni said.
The twins turn 3 years old in July and will enter preschool in the fall.
