History repeats itself. In New York City in January 1969, the newly elected Mayor John Lindsay declared war on "the power brokers." Trash collection was one of the services which unions stopped providing. New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller used the National Guard to collect trash in May, five months after Lindsay took office and five months after the unions stopped collecting it. [From article]
