Canada Ranks First in Freedom, Tolerance

[From article]
O Canada: you might be the land of the free now.
A new study reveals that the United States’ neighbor to the north has the “freest country in the world,” with the greatest tolerance for immigrants worldwide.
Canada’s ranking as the top nation in the world for personal freedom can be found in the Legatum Institute’s 2015 Prosperity Index. The London-based international public policy think tank released its findings Monday.
Typically, a country’s prosperity has been based on its material wealth, but at the Legatum Institute, this data is studied along with quality-of-life metrics.
[. . .]
Since 2009, Canada has risen five places to the top of the personal freedom sub-index: 94 percent of Canadians think they have the freedom to direct the courses of their own lives.
Here are the top 10 countries for personal freedom:
1. Canada
2. New Zealand
3. Norway
4. Luxembourg
5. Iceland
6. Ireland
7. Sweden
8. Denmark
9. Australia
10. Uruguay
The United States ranked 15th worldwide.

Drug Dealing Students at Harvard University, Who Me?

[From article]
“I’m not a dealer,” Noah said. “I only ever sell to my friends. I mean, I guess technically it is dealing, but it’s because I’m not buying weed to sell. When I buy weed, I never plan to resell it, but sometimes my friends come to me and tell me they need some.”

Older Americans Face Threats To Their Housing

[From article]
Of all the financial threats facing Americans of retirement age — outliving savings, falling for scams, paying for long-term care — housing isn't supposed to be one. But after a home-price collapse, the worst recession since the 1930s and some calamitous decisions to turn homes into cash machines, millions of them are straining to make house payments.
The consequences can be severe. Retirees who use retirement money to pay housing costs can face disaster if their health deteriorates or their savings run short. They're more likely to need help from the government, charities or their children. Or they must keep working deep into retirement.
[. . .]
They say they shouldn't have qualified for a loan that big. They alleged in an unsuccessful lawsuit against two mortgage firms and a title company that "someone" without their knowledge had inflated Lowe's income on the loan application to get the mortgage approved. (A court ruled in 2013 that "a reasonably prudent person" should have spotted "the alleged wrongdoing" in the application in 2005.)

Four Hundred Million Financial Records Stolen Online

[From article[
Federal officials warned companies Monday that hackers have stolen more than 500 million financial records over the past 12 months, essentially breaking into banks without ever entering a building.
"We're in a day when a person can commit about 15,000 bank robberies sitting in their basement," said Robert Anderson, executive assistant director of the FBI's Criminal Cyber Response and Services Branch.
The U.S. financial sector is one of the most targeted in the world, FBI and Secret Service officials told business leaders at a cybersecurity event organized by the Financial Services Roundtable. The event came in the wake of mass hacking attacks against Target, Home Depot, JPMorgan Chase and other financial institutions.
"You're going to be hacked," Joseph Demarest, assistant director of the FBI's cyberdivision, told the business leaders. "Have a plan."
Nearly 439 million records were stolen in the past six months, said Supervisory Special Agent Jason Truppi of the FBI. Nearly 519 million records were stolen in the past 12 months, he said.

Harvard Med School Research Dean Leaves For Big Business Gig

"the Medical School [. . .] announced that due to financial constraints it would close its New England Primate Research Center, which has come under fire for what some have called negligent treatment of animals.";Why is there never any concern about illegal abuses of humans used for medical research without consent at the prestigious medical school? Why are complaints about grad students abusing vulnerable humans always ignored? Why is abuse of human subjects less important than abuse of animal subjects? Why are humans who complain about non consensual human experiments designated mentally ill by prominent medical school professors?
