The U.S. government funded research into methane emissions from sheep digestive systems — flatulence and burps — to see why some sheep produce more of the greenhouse gas than others.
Researchers with the Energy Department’s Joint Genome Institute wanted to find out exactly why animals of the same species produce different levels of methane. The ultimate hope of the the research is to find ways to breed livestock that produce less methane when they pass gas.

Harvard University Fined For Animal Research Abuses

an email statement from a spokesperson from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals: “For an institution that receives $185 million annually in taxpayer funds alone, half of which is spent on animal experiments, a $24,000 fine for years of abusing and neglecting monkeys won’t motivate Harvard to do better by animals.

Harvard Medical School also released a statement saying the federal fine was appropriate. “The leadership of the school cares deeply about upholding exemplary standards of care,” it said.

At least animals used for experiments get some scrutiny. Harvard's use of human subjects without consent often get no scrutiny at all. The university did not comment on what their standards are for using human subjects without consent.

Harvard Researchers Abuse Animals, Human Research Abuse Remains Unaddressed

"Paula S. Gladue, a veterinary medical officer inspector, cited the facility." This verifies that animals continue to have greater protections in medical research than humans. There are no comparable inspectors
to issue citations for human experimentation abuses. The Code of Federal Regulations (Title 45 CFR Section 46) carries no penalties for non compliance in human experiments. Neither police, the district attorney, or the medical examiner investigates human deaths in experiments. But the Animal Welfare Act of 1966, carries fines and prison penalties for violations of protections for animals used in experiments. "Michael A. Budkie, executive director of Stop Animal Exploitation Now—an organization that focuses on ending animal abuse in laboratories. [. . .]has contacted and filed a complaint with NIH, requesting an investigation." Though an Office of Human Subjects Research exists in the NIH the dozen or so employees do not investigate complaints of violations of the CFR in human experiments. The National Institute of Justice has a Human Subjects Protection Officer which also conducts no investigations. They demand evidence from the abused human subjects, usually vulnerable persons with no ability to defend themselves. It's curious that research animals have greater protections than research humans, just as illegal aliens get more privileges than citizens. What are the priorities of those delightfully spineless politicians who write the laws?

Animals Have Better Protections Than Humans

The Animal Welfare Act provides penalties for non compliance using animals for research. The laws on use of human subjects for research Title 45 CFR Section 46 has no penalties for non compliance. Medical researchers use vulnerable persons for experiments without consent and they incur no liability. In one gene therapy experiment at Harvard teaching hospitals in Boston three humans died. The FDA which regulates devices (genes) stopped the experiment. Police and local prosecutors do not investigate human deaths in experiments. They allow researchers to do their own investigations. There is no People for the Ethical Treatment of Humans.

Animals Higher Priority Than Humans


"Researchers defended the [radiation] testing [on monkeys] as adhering to government guidelines." (Dave Wedge, "Protesters gather to save space monkeys," Boston Herald, December 4, 2009) US and state laws regulating animal research provide criminal penalties for non compliance. US law [there are no MA state laws] on use of human subjects for experiments provide no penalty for non compliance. Why is there no concern for vulnerable human research subjects especially mental patients at McLean hospital?

Government and private researchers use vulnerable persons for testing of high tech electromagnetic radiation and other electronic weapons research without consent across the US. Yet there is silence from civil rights organizations and journalists. Why are monkeys a higher priority?

"All research laboratories at McLean are inspected regularly and comply with all institutional, state and federal guidelines." If there are violations there are no penalties when humans are used for experiments.
