Top Brooklyn, NY Hospital Executives Replaced After Negligent Death Of Woman Patient

Grisel Soto, 47, left, with Christopher Matos

[From article]
Three top executives at Coney Island Hospital have been ousted in the wake of a controversial patient death, sources told The Post.
[. . .]
Officials with the city Health and Hospitals Corp., which operates the Brooklyn hospital, confirmed that the three execs have stepped down in order to “improve the patient experience and culture.”
The high-level shake-up came just a month after the Feb. 1 emergency-room death of 47-year-old patient Grisel Soto.
Her demise spurred an HHC review that uncovered the unauthorized hiring of 450 additional staff and a $65 million projected deficit, one source said.
Nursing staff at Coney Island misdiagnosed Soto as suffering from a overdose of synthetic marijuana, family members have alleged in press accounts.
“They treated her like a psych patient,” a source alleged.
Soto’s death from allegedly undiagnosed meningitis is under investigation by the city Medical Examiner’s Office.
Autopsy results are not yet complete, an ME spokeswoman said Thursday.
Following Soto’s death, “The central office sent people to go through all the records at Coney Island for the past three weeks,” the source said.
The review found that the hospital had hired 450 employees, mostly nursing staff, without HHC approval, the source said.
[. . .]
“This hospital has been screwed up for decades,” another source told The Post.
Problems range from insect infestations to patient overcrowding, that source said.

Bellevue Hospital Center has been forced to transport its intensive care unit patients two blocks north to NYU Langone Medical Center, as the staff at the Bellevue ICU are consumed with Ebola care.
NYU Langone accepted two adult patients over the weekend from the Bellevue ICU, and was expecting to take two more pediatric ICU patients later Monday. The hospitals campuses are located about two blocks apart on the East Side of Manhattan.
“These recent transfers will help alleviate some of the demand on Bellevue’s critical care staff as they focus on current patient care issues,” the hospitals said in a joint statement.

New York City Hospital Workers Call In Sick, Fear Ebola Patient

This is a human problem, which is easily apparent in Africa too. At one hearing a congressman pointed out that medical professionals are human too. One argued against quarantining medical professionals who volunteer in Africa and return to the U.S. The opposition argued that it would put too much of a burden on volunteers keeping them from their jobs and families.  So they should not be quarantined because they are special humans?

[From article]
An extraordinary number of Bellevue Hospital staffers called in sick on Friday rather than treat the city’s first Ebola patient — and those who showed up were terrified to enter his isolation chamber, sources told The Post.
“The nurses on the floor are miserable with a ‘why me?’ attitude, scared to death and overworked because all their co-workers called out sick,” one source said.
“One nurse even went as far as to pretend she was having a stroke to get out of working there, but once they cleared her in the ER they sent her back up,” the source added.
[. . .]
“As a doctor, he knows a lot about medicine, so he would call the nurses station all day and going back and forth with doctors on what to do,” the source said.
The sick doctor has been passing time in his pressurized room by watching TV and eating hospital food.
Visitors are forbidden — but he’ll be able to Skype with friends and pals once his room gets outfitted with a video camera, sources said.

NY Hospital Pharmacist Stole $5 million in Pain Killers

[From article]
The one-time top pharmacist at Mount Sinai Beth Israel hospital was arrested Tuesday in the theft of $5.6 million in painkillers that prosecutors believe ended up on the black market.
Anthony D’Alessandro, who was the hospital’s pharmacy director for 14 years, was busted at his home on Staten Island, prosecutors said. He’s set to be arraigned later Tuesday.
The 47-year-old allegedly stole nearly 193,000 oxycodone pills since 2009 , until he was fired in the spring.

Harvard University Goes For The Money, Gives Up Equal Protection and Due Process Rights

Clever piece of legislation, making business for lawyers. Like other universities Harvard joins the grasp for U.S. taxpayer funds, denying their students faculty and administrators Due Process rights. Disappointing that Harvard did not challenge the law itself. This policy discriminates against men a violation of the law with which it purports to comply. It will generate lawsuits for damages which requires a preponderance of evidence. Rape is a state crime. State courts address that act assisted by specially trained police, medical professionals, and prosecutors. Is the system so flawed it cannot be fixed?

[From article]
According to the policy, a number of actions, including conduct that “interferes with or limits a person’s ability to participate in or benefit from [University programs]” fall under “unwelcome sexual conduct.”
[. . .]
While there is no timeframe for original complaints to be filed, appeals must be delivered within a week of the release of the final investigative report.

The new procedures also allow for complainants to request anonymity,

Karvonides said in a press release that the new central investigative office “will create a new level of continuity and consistency” in the way the University handles allegations of sexual assault. She also said that though central investigators are at the center of the new policy, individual schools will be involved in cases involving their students.
