Councilor Mazen has yet to respond to Breitbart article that he is a founder of the MA Chapter of CAIR, blacklisted by the FBI because of its terrorist connections.

Councilor Mazen is unconventional as one of few children of upper class parents in politics, like George W. Bush, William Weld, John Kerry. Cambridge likes to elect children of working class parents, with exceptions. Most have an affiliation with Harvard University, e.g., former Mayor Ken Reeves. Mazen is different as a graduate of elite MIT. He supports policies that are conventional in Cambridge which explains his popularity with voters. His support for raising minimum wage, though conventional in Cambridge, is perplexing with his engineering expertise. Robots will be taking more and more jobs as wages rise.

Mike Royko, No Nonsense Journalist

The late Mike Royko -- a columnist in Chicago for many decades -- warned young reporters against hobnobbing with politicians because it might compromise their objectivity. As he noted, “[i]f you get too close, then you’re going to feel uncomfortable when you have to stick it to them.” Unhappily, contemporary media personalities such as The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, along with most of the press, seem to be unaware of Royko’s wisdom.

Now, after revelations that he secretly met Obama in the White House, and especially since Obama’s most recent appearance on his show, Stewart is not credible when it comes to speaking truth to left-wing Democrats in power.

Not only do many media denizens routinely associate with the ruling class at work and at play, it is no longer rare for a journalist’s significant-other and/or relative to be a key government official. The presidents of CBS News and ABC News, for example, have siblings who are major players in Obama’s administration. In 2013, CNN’s deputy bureau chief, Virginia Mosley, was married to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s deputy, Tom Nides. One also thinks of instances in which a former key member of a Democrat administration -- such as George Stephanopoulos -- becomes a TV anchor at ABC News. (I originally wrote that Stephanopoulos “changed careers” to join ABC News, but after remembering that he donated at least $75,000 to the Clinton family foundation, I decided he hadn’t “changed careers” after all.) Other former political operatives may not work in the media, but they hold prominent positions in major J-schools.

Today the connections between the media and the ruling class are so close that it is virtually impossible to separate them.

Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, for example, perhaps the most famous journalist of the late 19th century, dropped out of school after the 5th grade.
Perhaps the best-known American journalist of the first half of the 20th century was H. L. Mencken, a.k.a. “the Sage of Baltimore.” Mencken graduated from a mathematics, technology, and science-oriented high school, and took a correspondence class or two in journalism from Cosmopolitan University. Beyond that, Mencken learned journalism on the job.

a large portion of those working in the media have, at worst, upper-middle-class backgrounds, and thus have little or nothing in common with America’s “common” men and women.
More important, given their socioeconomic background, and the locales in which they live and work, today’s media personalities have much in common with our ruling class.

Booker, who is ignoring Bell, just as Case did, has a better résumé (Stanford, Oxford, Yale Law School) than reputation. His liberalism is as conventional as his eccentricity is disturbing. He is a fabulist (he has been called "the Garden State's Mother Goose") given to asserting as facts various self-aggrandizing figments of his imagination (e.g., T-Bone, a nonexistent Newark drug dealer, with whom Booker has had, he says, instructive interactions). Worst of all, Booker is perfectly suited to today's Senate. Flitting like a waterbug on the surface of things, he seizes fleeting headlines as excuses for wielding the federal government in opportunistic grandstanding. His crusade du jour would increase taxes on professional sports leagues in order to spend $100 million on domestic violence prevention.

Clueless Conformist Lawyers

Baskin makes no distinction between those who go to law school to make
money and those who want to help vulnerable people. (KARA BASKIN,
"Nervous, stressed, and depressed, LLC," Boston Phoenix, April 29,
2009) Even if they want to make money and help people the path is open
and opportunities are available. Artists, actors and other creative
people work at jobs to make money and do their primary work after
hours. There are so many poor who need help in this country it is
shameful that this essay does not encourage these young lawyers to
just begin. Prairie doctors used to accept livestock as payment for
health care. Why do these conformist lawyers only seek work at
corporate law firms? Who wants to work 60 hours a week and endure
pressure to bill more hours. Is that how human suffering is reduced?

No wonder there is so much government corruption. Lawyers who are
licensed to correct abuses, officers of the courts, have no clue or
desire to solve problems. They wait for the wealthy and powerful to
tell them what to do. Is that how universities train young lawyers?
