Ebola Crisis Diverts Attention From Other Illnesses

[From article]
Hub doctors just back from West Africa’s Ebola zone warn that although the outbreak shows signs of tempering, deaths caused by a slew of other illnesses and even childbirth complications are skyrocketing.
“We’re really seeing that a majority of morbidity and mortality now is not Ebola, it’s actually other preventable diseases. All of these countries had poor infrastructure to begin with,” said Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, director of infection control at Boston University National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories, at a NEIDL-hosted Ebola forum yesterday.
[. . .]
fear of transmission led to the shuttering of several medical centers in affected areas, leaving pregnant women with nowhere to turn.
“Midwives don’t want them, doctors don’t want them. Maternal mortality and neonatal mortality are on the rise. Women who need C-sections aren’t getting them,” Hartman said.
He added that because immunization rates are down, illnesses like measles and the whooping cough are likely to increase significantly.
