US gun laws may conflict with HIPPA, and state privacy laws regarding medical records. The federal law also demonizes all persons with a history of mental illness. Nonetheless universities as prestigious as Harvard University encourage their students to enter mental health programs to get a taste of psychiatric love. This voids their Second Amendment rights when they are students. If they are ever arrested, the police and prosecutors can describe them as having "a history of mental illness."

Suspect: Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, charged with killing Sheriff Walter E. 'Eugene' Crum

Maynard passed the background check because data regarding his medical history hadn't yet been entered into a federal database that exists to keep the mentally unstable from getting guns.

Federal law prohibits the sale of firearms and ammunition to individuals with a history of mental illness. States are required to share the names of mentally ill people with the national background-check system, which was established under the 1993 Brady Bill.
