More than 200 women and girls were raped by Sudanese soldiers in their village in North Darfur after one of the nearby garrison's men went missing.
The women - including 80 schoolgirls - were subjected to the eight-hour ordeal on Friday night, just hours after the garrison's commander gave the villagers until sunset to retrieve the missing soldier.

'They beat the people with rifle butts and chased all of the men outside the village,' he added. 'Then they started to rape about 200 women and girls, which lasted from Friday evening until 4am on Saturday.'

He said: 'The commander acknowledged that his forces 'committed a mistake' against Tabit. He explained that the soldier who went missing was found in Tawila locality.'
The commander asked the villagers to record the names of the rape victims and the wounded, and to bring them to the military hospital in El Fasher.
'We refused his apology,' the Sheikh added, 'and demand the formation of an independent investigation into the crime, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.'

Muhammad Al-Jazouli: American taxpayers share the blame for the blood of every Iraqi child. Our Prophet Muhammad said that anyone who helps kill a Muslim man – even by uttering half a word – no longer enjoys protection. Whoever helps kill a Muslim child, or rather, a Muslim man, with half a word… Listen to this fatwa… In its war with the infidels, Islam recognizes no distinction between regular armies and civilians.

I was very happy to learn about the relevant hadith. I felt overjoyed when I heard it. [Mus'ab Ibn Juthama] told the Prophet Muhammad that while the Muslims would attack the polytheists at night, women and children would be harmed.
The Prophet Muhammad answered: "[Their offspring] constitute part of them." They are part of them, said our beloved Muhammad. This is not merely someone's opinion. Thus, killing their women and children is permitted.

A Sudanese woman doctor who married a Christian man and who was convicted earlier this week on charges of “apostasy” was sentenced to death on Thursday, judicial officials said.
According to the Sudanese officials, 26-year-old Meriam Ibrahim, whose father was Muslim, was convicted on Sunday and given four days to repent and escape death. She was sentenced after that grace period expired, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
The BBC reported the woman’s death by hanging will not be carried out until two years after the birth of her child.

The court in Khartoum also ordered Ibrahim be given 100 lashes for committing “zena” — an Arabic word for illegitimate sex — for having sexual relations with a non-Muslim man.

As in many Muslim nations, Muslim women in Sudan are prohibited from marrying non-Muslims, though Muslim men can marry outside their faith. By law, children must follow their father’s religion.

Exporting food during a famine is not unusual. (JEFFREY GETTLEMAN, "The Food Chain," The New York Times, August 10, 2008) In "Development as Freedom," Nobel Prize winner, Amartya Sen says "coexistence of hunger and food exports is a common phenomenon in many famines." (page 170)
"What is crucial in analyzing hunger is the substantive freedom of the individual and the family to establish ownership over an adequate amount of food, which can be done either by growing the food [. . .] or by buying it [. . .]. The focus has to be on the economic power and substantive freedom of individuals and families to buy enough food, and not just on the quantum of food in the country in question." Displaced Sudanese have no means of earning money to purchase food.
Sen goes on, "Food is not distributed in the economy through charity or some system of automatic sharing. The ability to acquire food has to be earned." (Page 161) "Famines kill millions of people [. . .] but they don't kill the rulers." (page 180) "inequality has an important role in the development of famines." (page 187) "The sense of distance between the ruler and the ruled--between 'us' and 'them'--is a crucial feature of famines." (page 175) Sudan officials are most concerned for themselves rather than the plight of the poor. UN Officials lament exporting food because of higher prices than the UN will pay.
"Democracy can be a very positive influence in the prevention of famines." (page 184) But he adds, "Famines are in fact easy to prevent." (page 180) "A free press and an active political opposition constitute the best early-warning system a country threatened by famines can have." (page 181) Sudan is no Democracy.
