A German train company will start operating women-only carriages, a move which has been met with controversy.
Several reports suggest that the new carriages, for women and women travelling with children, are a response to the sex-attacks in Cologne on New Years Eve, which was largely blamed on migrants.
Regiobahn line announced this week that the women-only carriages will be available for passengers travelling between Leipzig and Chemnitz.[. . .]
The women-only carriage will be situated between the train's two 'quiet' coaches and next to the on-board 'customer service representative' - train conductor.
Regiobahn line said in a statement that 'the local proximity to the customer service representative is chosen deliberately'.
This comes just days after the first person was charged over a sexual offense in connection with the New Year's Eve attacks in Cologne. [. . .]
A 26-year-old Algerian man has been charged with sexual assault and theft, Cologne regional court spokesman Volker Koehler said Thursday.
He's accused of being in a group of around ten men who surrounded and groped a woman in the central train station, and of stealing her cellphone.
No trial date has been set. The man's name wasn't given because of German privacy laws.
More than 1,000 criminal complaints were filed over the crimes in Cologne, and several hundred of those alleged sexual crimes. Three suspects already have been convicted of theft.
A majority of the alleged attackers were reportedly migrants of foreign backgrounds, which fuelled the already heated debate on immigration in Germany and heightened tensions in the country.

Two Killed on LIRR Tracks In Queens, NY

A local commuter who asked to only be identified as Al, 61, said he often sees young people hanging out on the tracks.
“At nights the trains are silent and they are quick so you really don’t have time to spin around. You are gonna get hurt,” he added.
“There should be cops placed up there,” said Harry Raj, 53, an auto body repair worker who lives nearby. “It is easy to get to and it’s isolated. People are always up there all hours of the night. I’m not surprised it happened.”
Their bodies were discovered 200 feet east of of the Hollis platform and the engineer did attempt to stop, but it was too late, the MTA said.
“This location is known to have kids playing on the tracks all the time,” said Raj.
According to the MTA website, the train, which left from Ronkonkoma at 1:46 a.m., was scheduled to arrive at Penn Station at 3:05 a.m. but the accident caused major delays.

On Tuesday, an LIRR Montauk-branch train was heading east from Patchogue when the front end of the driver’s Ford Focus went beyond the lowered warning gate at Rider Avenue just after noon, the MTA said.
The oncoming train demolished the hatchback and dragged it.
“The car went airborne like it was a toy,” said Wayne Berry, who was headed to lunch when the crash took place.
“The driver just went through the gate like there was no train coming at all. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. [The car] got spun around and dragged like a rag doll.”
None of the 13 passengers aboard the train’s four passenger cars was injured.
The driver, identified as 67-year-old Garry Calderon, of Shirley, LI, was rushed to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

MBTA Employs Inmates, Students and Employees To Clear Snow From Rails

“As we navigate through this challenging winter, we will inform the public with consistent daily updates to keep the lines of communication open and allow Bay Staters to plan ahead as much as possible,” MBTA General Manager Dr. Beverly Scott said in a public statement.
Scott also said Monday that it could take 30 days for the transit system to return to normal service.
A mixture of union workers, students and others just looking to make some extra cash are shoveling MBTAtracks, WBZ-TV’s Nicole Jacobs reports. The MBTA is paying $30 an hour to workers who help clear the snow.

About 50 inmates from the Department of Correction are also helping to shovel, the MBTA said.

The transit system shut down completely on Sunday for the storm that dumped 16.2 inches of snowin the city, and rail and bus lines were operating on a limited schedule Monday.

A new report suggested that liberal billionaire Tom Steyer’s hedge fund profited from a $1 billion San Francisco light rail project pushed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Steyer was also a big supporter of Pelosi.
Despite being quick to criticize conservative political donors, the morning and evening news shows on ABC, CBS and NBC have all ignored the allegation since the Washington Free Beacon broke the story Aug. 12.



According to Washington Free Beacon, Pelosi “steered more than a billion dollars in federal financing” to a transportation project to provide light rail access to the Mission Bay neighborhood in San Francisco. This access helped cause the property value of land owned by Steyer’s hedge fund, Farallon Capital Management, to spike. Farallon has since sold all but two of those properties. Steyer gave at least $5,000 to Pelosi in 2011 alone.

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4
feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in
England, and English expatriates designed the US railroads.

Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail
lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad
tramways, and that's the gauge they used.

Why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built
the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons,
which used that wheel spacing.

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if
they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first
long distance roads in Europe (including England) for their
legions. Those roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial
ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their
wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they
were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United
States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived
from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot.
Bureaucracies live forever.

So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process
and wonder 'What horse's ass came up with this?,' you may be
exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide
enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses'
asses.) Now, the twist to the story:

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are
two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel
tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made
by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the
factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory
happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had
to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the
railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about
as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the
world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two
thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass. And you thought
being a horse's ass wasn't important? Ancient horse's asses control
almost everything... and
