Harvard University Apologizes To Students For PC Speech Codes

Drew Gilpin Faust, President, Harvard University

You are correct about the reason for an inability to have rational discussions of controversies. Civility (or kindness) is used to censor criticism, which is treated as hate speech. The same pattern exists at city government public meetings. The results are personal attacks toward those who dare to criticize. Lacking the ability to make rational arguments they resort to character assassination. Notice how administrators fear criticizing the nonsensical arguments made by law students who demand an end to "serious racism" at the law school. Remember "Hands Up Don't Shoot," 200 students on the steps of Widener, more at the law school? Washington Post calls it the biggest lie of 2015. You feel me?

[From comment]
Criticism hurts people’s feelings, and it hurts most when the recipient realizes it’s accurate. Treating “kindness” as the way to civil discourse doesn’t show students how to argue with accuracy and respect. It teaches them instead to neither give criticism nor tolerate it.

"Where in the list of ranked values are curiosity, discovery, reason, inquiry, skepticism or truth? (Were these values even options?) Where is critical thinking? No wonder the pledge talks about “attainment.” Attainment equals study cards and good grades -- a transcript to enable the student to move on to the next stage. Attainment isn’t learning, questioning or criticizing. It’s getting your ticket punched."

Harvard has advised students to lecture their non-Ivy-League relatives on liberal values in a bizarre set of holiday placemats to take home over Christmas.
The laminated cards raise some likely hot topics that lesser-educated family members may raise at the dinner table, then offers a suggested response.
Covering such complex issues as police brutality, racial divisions, and the Syrian war, one of the sections tells students to say: 'Racial justice includes welcoming Syrian refugees.'
[. . .]
Now, two deans have come out to apologize for the stunt.
Thomas Dingman, dean of freshmen, and Stephen Lassoed, dean of student life, said in a letter to students on Wednesday: 'We write to acknowledge that the placemat distributed in some of your dining halls this week failed to account for the many viewpoints that exist on our campus on some of the most complex issues we confront as a community and society today.
'Our goal was to provide a framework for you to engage in conversations with peers and family members as you return home for the winter break, however, it was not effectively presented and it ultimately caused confusion in our community.'

High Profile Censorship Generates Business for Diversity Industry

[From article]
Judged by the outrage, those University of Oklahoma Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) frat boys who sang a ditty that used the N-Word must certainly have done something particularly egregious. Why else did the university immediately, sans any hearing or due process, expel some of them, close down their SAE chapter while the fraternity’s headquarters launched its own Inquisition to determine if other chapters are likewise guilty of N-Word use? And keep in mind that this occurred on a bus and was perfectly legal since hate speech, absent other factors, is not a standalone offense.
[. . .]
Why would merely saying a word in private instigate death threats? That nobody was hurt, abused or personally insulted in the making of this sing-a-long only compounds the over-kill.
[. . .]
This “natural” inclination toward cursing was perfectly illustrated by the rant of Eric Striker, a football player recruited to play at Oklahoma but who changed his mind after the SAE incident. He sent a video explaining his reasons: “Same mother*******s that talk about racism doesn’t exist are the same mother******s shaking our hands, giving us hugs, telling us how you really love us,” Striker said. “F**k you phony-ass, fraud-ass bitches.”
[. . .]
Now, what makes uttering the N-word by whites so profoundly different than thousands of insults targeting other groups?
[. . .]
In any case, why is the N-Word harmless when said by fellow blacks but not whites, Asians or Hispanics? What if a black heard the N-Word but was unable to identify the speaker? Is it still toxic? Or what if a white person loudly played an N-Word infused rap song sung by a black? Would this qualify as “hateful”?
[. . .]
If thinking anti-black thoughts were the precursor to violence, and whites secretly harbored all these racist thoughts, American should be awash in white anti-black violence. But the very opposite is true -- interracial violence is overwhelmingly black on white (also see here).
[. . .]
Why the rush to ride roughshod over constitutional protections of free speech? Let me suggest that this is all part of the extractive process that drives the racial grievance industry. The underlying principle here is that black misfortunes are white instigated, and if whites could be cured of their pathologies, blacks would thrive.
[. . .]
In sum, exposing racist white fraternities and their “toxic” speech is the Full Employment Act for the diversity industry.

Get a Spine!

Get a Spine!

John Edwards' spokesman, David E. Bonior said, “Since they have nothing
real to use against him, Coulter’s resorting to the classic right-wing strategy
of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion.” (ADAM NAGOURNEY, "G.O.P.
Candidates Criticize Slur by Conservative Author," The New York Times, March 4,
2007)
If being homosexual is no longer illegal, how can an allegation of being
homosexual be a slur or a smear? But even if it were a slur, it is speech
protected by the U.S. Constitution. Due to the pervasive spinelessness of
political leaders the number of words prohibited in the public discourse grows
each year.
If these alleged leaders would grow or purchase spines, perhaps we could
have a rational discussion about issues of substance instead of the inane
discussions that pass for debate.

G.O.P. Candidates Criticize Slur by Conservative Author
By ADAM NAGOURNEY

WASHINGTON, March 3 — Three of the leading Republican presidential candidates on
Saturday denounced one of their party’s best-known conservative commentators for
using an antigay epithet when discussing a Democratic presidential contender at
a gathering of conservatives here.

The remarks by Ann Coulter, an author who regularly speaks at conservative
events, were sharply denounced by the candidates, Senator John McCain of
Arizona, Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts. Their
statements came after Democrats, gay rights groups and bloggers raised a storm
of protest over the remarks.
