Paterson Commissioner Quits Over Abuse Case

[From article]

"Research has shown that fear of reprisal is a major factor in whether victims report crimes.

The more dangerous the attack, the more often fear of reprisal is a reason for not reporting the crime."

"Now some black pols, including Rep. Charlie Rangel, are warning Attorney General Andrew Cuomo not to run against Paterson, saying it would inflame racial tensions.

Rangel actually told a reporter it would be a "moral decision" if Cuomo challenged the first black governor. Now there's an oxymoron -- Rangel and morals."

State Police Political Abuses

Thomas Mungeer, president of the State Troopers Police Benevolent Association, said
"Despite the inadequate manpower due to attrition and requests for help by municipalities, the governor has reassigned road troopers to the detail assigned to protect him and his entourage, increasing the size of that detail to more than 200 members,"
[. . .]
"Paterson's security force has grown from approximately 100 officers to over 200 since he took office in March 2008"
[. . .]
"Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, the former governor's son, concluded that political interference and favoritism had been rampant for over a decade within the upper ranks of the State Police."

Media Makes the Politicians?

Obama snubbed NY Gov. Paterson showing his love for Cuomo. Are Obama and Cuomo products of media images?

"If you think Cuomo's probe of Lewis is misguided, consider some of his other pet projects. He investigated the bond-rating agencies -- which slapped all those Triple-A ratings on near-worthless mortgage debt -- without forcing the raters to do anything more than make some marginal added disclosures. The raters' conflicted business model of being paid by the companies they're rating remains firmly intact.
[. . .]
Cuomo's record isn't all bad. Early in his career, he broke with conventional wisdom and issued a report showing how the homeless were afflicted with mental illness or drug addiction, rather than simply down on their luck.
[In]
his days at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. As I show in my upcoming book, as HUD secretary, Cuomo was a major player in prodding mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to guarantee more risky loans, including subprime loans."

Paterson Should Stop Running and Be Governor

Paterson needs to stop running for office and just be Governor for a while. (Editorial, "Ravitch's Wise Advice, NYPost, October 6, 2009; Brendan Scott, "Haunted gov rips 'phantom' rivals," NYPost, October 5, 2009) He acts more like Obama, who is always campaigning and does not know how to govern. Instead of baiting rivals Paterson should propose and force hard choices on the legislature. His fear of offending interest groups will lead to lower ratings. He needs to act showing he has a spine.

Arrogance Is Great

The White House plays the endorsement game during a precarious period in US history -- two wars, a stagnant economy, and hostile voters. (Fredric U. Dicker, "'Dead meat' Dave will quit early: Dem," New York Post, September 28, 2009) Obama dictates his choice for Governor long before the campaign. He weakens further Gov. Paterson's abilities to address New York's problems. The President knows how to campaign and how to give speeches. He shows his lack of ability to govern and to manage. He indicates a lack of concern for taxpayers by playing politics during this unsettled time. His misguided and unformulated national policies are matched by his ill timed endorsement.

Governor Paterson Wallows

Governor Paterson appears clueless regarding how politics is played. He digs a bigger hole for himself each time he tries to save his candidacy and improve his poll numbers. (Fredric U. Dicker, "Paterson ripped over 'silence' of the Dems, " New York Post, August 31, 2009, Page 2) Withholding his support from Thompson, he reveals his fantasy that Bloomberg will support him.

If Paterson gets the nomination without an extreme act of civil benefits, he will lose to the Republican candidate. Does he expect to survive with the help of Bloomberg who will likely support Giuliani?

One question is why did Spitzer choose him? Another is how did he ever get elected state senator?

Only Black Men Understand?

Attorney King says white people "will also never know what it feels like to be stopped by a police officer on the street for no apparent reason, or to feel watched in a store while shopping for your kids, or to get uncomfortable on a dark street because you sense the white couple coming toward you is uncomfortable, or (in politics) to read criticisms about you that seem out of bounds -- and wonder whether these things happen because you are black." (CHARLIE KING, "RACE & POLITICS: NAVIGATING IN A NEW ERA," New York Post, August 25, 2009) This is a self-serving unsubstantiated nonsensical race based claim. Police, storekeepers, and pedestrians target people for many reasons not just skin color.

He adds, "It is completely understandable when an African-American leader asserts that race has a role in his or her unfavorable treatment, because race and racism still plague African-Americans as a group." This is a faulty argument. People treat morons and a boors unfavorably. Some black people are paranoid. Some use race to bully others to get special treatment.

After arguing that allegations of racism are effective in black districts he
concludes that it is bad state-wide. Does he imply that if the state was a majority black it would be good strategy?

NY Gov. Paterson's Attitude Toward Police Unlike Harvard's Gates

NY Gov. David Paterson, legally blind and black by design tells of his experience with police and a burglar. Unlike Harvard's Gates the Gov. was grateful that the police protected him.

"In line with last week's story of the black Harvard professor's arrest, the Gov. recalled when he was much younger and in the house all alone. He heard a robber enter the front door. Scared to death, he jumped out a window. Arrested, the cops wouldn't let him go until he proved, by a photo he knew was inside, that it was indeed his home. 'But,' says the governor now, 'I wasn't angry. I was just so grateful I had police protection from whoever might still be in that house.'"

Misguided Wrath

Misguided Wrath

[This letter was published in the June 21, 2008 edition of the New York Post. It was edited.]

The new New York Governor directs his wrath at the wrong target.
(FREDRIC U. DICKER, "GOV BLASTS 'NASTY' MIKE," New York Post, June 16,
2008) The issue is a gambling operation that loses money, not a nasty
Mayor. Meyer Lansky recognized that if you run the house you cannot
lose. No need to cheat. That the NY OTB operation was costing the
city money shows that the skim was larger than it should have been to
keep nosy eyes away.
