Italian Police Capture Super Boss of 'Ndrangheta After Two Decades On The Run

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi wrote in a tweet: 'Thank you to the judges and the forces of order. Viva l'Italia'.

[From article]
One of Italy's most wanted mafia bosses has been arrested today after two decades on the run, fleeing a life sentence for murder, it has emerged.
Ernesto Fazzalari, 46, was captured in the early hours of the morning in an apartment in a remote part of the southern region of Calabria, home to the notorious 'Ndrangheta organised crime syndicate.
Fazzalari was one of the country's most wanted 'Ndrangheta fugitives along with 'superboss' Matteo Messina Denaro.

Ernesto Fazzalari, 46, has been arrested today after two decades on the run, fleeing a life sentence for murder, it has emerged.

On the run since 1996, he was convicted in absentia in 1999 of mafia association, kidnapping, illegal possession of weapons and a double homicide linked to a bloody 1989-91 feud which left 32 people dead in his home town of Taurianova.
His arrest was hailed by the government as a significant victory for the state in its battle against what is now considered Italy's most powerful mafia group.
'Thank you to the judges and the forces of order. Viva l'Italia,' Prime Minister Matteo Renzi wrote in a tweet.
Interior Minister Angelino Alfano described Fazzalari as 'one of the most important fugitives and a leading underworld figure.'
He added: 'This shows that you cannot run from justice. These are the kind of victories that encourage and support us in the difficult but winnable fight against organised crime.'
Notoriously ruthless, the 'Ndrangheta has surpassed Sicily's Cosa Nostra and the Naples-based Camorra thanks to the wealth it has amassed as the principal importer and wholesaler of cocaine produced in Latin America and smuggled into Europe via north Africa and southern Italy.
That trade is worth billions and previous police operations have indicated that the 'Ndrangheta has well-established links with Colombian producer cartels, Mexican crime gangs and mafia families in New York and other parts of North America.
The organisation is made up of numerous village and family-based clans based in Calabria, the rural, mountainous and under-developed 'toe' of Italy's boot.

The name 'Ndrangheta comes from the Greek for courage or loyalty and the organisation's secretive culture and brutal enforcement of codes of silence have made it very difficult to penetrate.
A series of arrests in late 2014 and early 2015 confirmed that the organisation had expanded its Italian operations outside Calabria by buying up dozens of legitimate business across the wealthier north of the country, largely to launder cocaine profits.
Those arrests also providing an unprecedented glimpse into the group's shadowy culture with police secretly filming a quasi-religious initiation ceremony in which new 'wise brothers' swear an 'oath of poison' in which they vow to kill themselves rather than betray a fellow clan member.
There are dozens of 'NDrangheta fugitives still at large despite regular arrests in Italy and around the world.
One alleged don, Rocco Zito, 87, was shot dead in Canada in January, Switzerland arrested 15 convicted 'Ndrangheta fugitives in March and last month the owner of a popular pizzeria in the Dutch seaside town of Scheveningen was unmasked as convicted Calabrian drugs smuggler Rocco Gasperini, 73.
Two mobsters who stayed in their homeland were arrested in January 'living like animals' in a Calabrian mountain bunker with a cache of sub-machine guns, rifles and pistols.
Giuseppe Ferraro and Giuseppe Crea were hiding from gangster enemies as well as the authorities.
In 2013 one of their associates, Francesco Raccosta, was killed by being fed alive to hungry pigs in revenge for his assassination of a rival boss.

Italian Crime Syndicate Dominates Southern Italy

[From article]
The owner of a successful cement business near the small town of Palmi, Saffioti in 2002 became one of only 30 people to turn state's witness against Calabria's 'Ndrangheta.
That year, out of deference to the mobsters or fear, 55 of his 60 employees quit, local banks closed his accounts, and his clients shunned him. His company's sales fell 97 percent, and he and his family have lived under 24-hour armed guard ever since.
[. . .]

While the 'Ndrangheta (pronounced en-DRANG-eta) flourishes, Calabria, the poorest of Italy's 20 regions with a population of almost 2 million, has seen no benefit for its local economy.
Calabria is a natural and historical treasure. It has almost 500 miles (800 km) of pristine beaches. The Apennine mountains rise thousands of feet in the interior, and hillsides tumble down to the sea, covered in cacti and century-old olive groves.
Once at the heart of the Greek and Roman empires, evocative ruins dot the coastline. The Riace bronzes, considered two of the most spectacular sculptures of the ancient world, were pulled out of the crystal clear waters of the Ionian coast.
But like the rest of the Mezzogiorno -- Italy's six southern regions plus the islands of Sicily and Sardinia -- Calabria has suffered seven straight years of recession and is challenging Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's efforts to fuel a recovery.
[. . .]

Thanks to Saffioti's testimony and closed circuit video recordings he made when he paid the mob, 48 'Ndrangheta members from nine different crime families went to jail. According to his own records and testimony, he paid the equivalent of 2.5 million euros in extortion over 18 years.
He could have fled and assumed a new identity as part of the witness protection program, but he chose to stay.
Now both his home and adjacent business are surrounded by 4-metre (13-foot) concrete walls, barbed wire, towering spotlights and dozens of video cameras. Four police stand on duty.
[. . .]

Over the past two decades, the 'Ndrangheta, which takes its meaning from 'strong man' in ancient Greek, has eclipsed its more storied Sicilian cousin Cosa Nostra by becoming Europe's biggest cocaine broker and establishing criminal colonies across the globe, prosecutor Cafiero de Raho told Reuters.
[. . .]
"Whoever is born here must follow the unwritten rules of a parallel state. To buy or sell a property or open a business, you go to the 'Ndrangheta, not the bureau of commerce," Saffioti said, adding that no deal was too small.
Before he turned state's witness, he had a job pouring concrete in the nearby town of Polistena. Though he was going to earn only some 250 euros ($280) for the work, the local boss, Giovanni Longo, demanded his cut.
"He told me it wasn't a question of money, but of respect. He said: 'It's like when you go visit someone's home, you knock on the door. You don't just walk in."
In 2001, a mafia hit man shot Longo dead.

Italian Police Arrest Sicilian Crime Boss

[From article]
Italian police on Monday arrested 11 suspects linked to the fugitive head of the Sicilian Mafia, including a former boss who ran a secret message system for the mobster using a sheep-based code.
Matteo Messina Denaro, 53, who has been on the run since 1993, used a farm in Mazara del Vallo to communicate with his henchmen via the aged-old method of "pizzini", bits of paper containing messages often written in cipher, police said.
Among those arrested was former boss Vito Gondola, 77, whose job it was to call the clan members to alert them to each new message, which was placed under a rock in a field at the farm and often destroyed on the spot after reading.
[. . .]
Three of those arrested were over 70 years old.
The only known photos of Denaro date back to the early 1990s. He is believed to be the successor of the godfathers Toto Riina and Bernardo Provenzano, who are both serving life sentences, but less is known about him.
At the height of his power he had a reputation as a flashy, ruthless womaniser who ruled over at least 900 men with an iron fist.
[. . .]
The Sicilian Mafia, known as "Cosa Nostra" or "Our Thing", was the country's most powerful organised crime syndicate in the 1980s and 1990s, but has seen its power diminish following years of investigations and mass arrests.
It also faces fierce underworld competition from the increasingly powerful Naples-based Camorra and Calabria's 'Ndrangheta.

Italian Police Arrest 'Ndrangheta Crime Syndicate Boss, Seize Gambling Assets

[From article]
Italian police said on Wednesday they had seized assets worth 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) and issued 41 arrest warrants in raids on gambling companies in Italy and abroad run by the 'Ndrangheta mafia organization.
Police believe the firms, including six that were operating out of Malta, were used to launder vast sums of illicit cash.
Italy's mafia groups, including the 'Ndrangheta from the southern region of Calabria, the Camorra from Naples and Sicily's Cosa Nostra, have strengthened their grip on southern Italy's economy and spread to the richer north during a three-year economic slump.
Among the targets of Wednesday's operation were 1,500 betting shops, 82 gambling websites, 45 Italian companies and 11 foreign firms, as well as "innumerable" property assets, the financial police said in a statement.
Apart from the firms run from Malta, two were in Spain, two in Romania and one in Austria.

Italian Prosecutors Capture Calabrian 'Ndrangheta Initiation Ceremony On Video, Arrest 40

Ilda Boccassini, Milan Prosecutor

[From article]
"For the first time the swearing-in ceremonies have been recorded live," Milan prosecutor Ilda Boccassini told journalists at a press conference following raids which saw 37 people landed behind bars and another three placed under house arrest.
"For the first time we heard it from the voice of the mafia," instead of relying on details from police informants, she said.
Those arrested are believed to belong to three clans based near Milan but affiliated with the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta, an organised crime group made up of networks of hundreds of family gangs even more feared and secretive than the Sicilian Mafia.
[. . .]
In what he describes as the "oath of poison", he says there are two alternatives open to the disloyal: "Either you poison yourselves or you take this (gun) which shoots. There must always be a bullet reserved; one for you."
Boccassini said the Santa's affiliation "is in their DNA and under their skin and they can leave the 'Ndrangheta either by collaborating with the state or through death".
The name 'Ndrangheta comes from the Greek for courage or loyalty. Its tight clan structure has made it famously difficult to penetrate.

'Ndrangheta Earns More Than McDonald's and Deutsche Bank Combined

[From article]
the 'Ndrangheta mafia from southern Italy made more money last year than Deutsche Bank and McDonalds put together,
[. . .]
The 'Ndrangheta is thought to have some 400 key "operatives" in 30 countries, but its activities are believed to involve as many as 60,000 people worldwide, the report said.
Extortion and usury last year brought in a substantial 2.9 billion euros, while embezzlement earned the mafia 2.4 billion euros and gambling 1.3 billion euros.
Arms sales, prostitution, counterfeiting goods and people-smuggling were less lucrative, bringing in less than a billion euros together.
The 'Ndrangheta -- whose name comes from the Greek for courage or loyalty -- has a tight clan structure which has made it famously difficult to penetrate.

Alleged Camorra Member Shot Dead

[From article]
The newspaper claimed the man, nicknamed 'O Cinese, had been released from prison in May last year and had a lengthy criminal record.
The Secondigliano neighbourhood where he was shot is home to one of Italy's fiercest turf wars over the hotly-contested drug empire in the region.
Police estimate the illegal drugs trade in the area and nearby Scampia is worth £79 million a year, with dozens of killings in the battle for domination.
[. . .]
The Italian Mafia syndicate, which dates back hundreds of years, is said to control everything from the drug industry to waste collection in the south of the country
It is made up of family-based clans which have worked together in the past but also fight brutal wars against each other, with bloody results.
Last week the body of toddler Nicola Campolongo was found in a burnt-out car in Cosenza, Calabria.
Police believed both the killers and the victims, which also included the three-year-old's Salvatore Iannicelli, 52, and his girlfriend Ibtissa Touss, 27, hailed from the equally war-torn Ndrangheta Mafia syndicate.
On top of the car was a single unmarked 50 cent piece, apparently a symbol that the grandfather had not paid his debt.

The secret document was found by detectives in Rome during an investigation into the murder of a member of the ‘Ndrangheta mafia, which is based in the southern region of Calabria, the toe of the Italian boot.
It refers to a pledge of “blood and honour” that is required of those wanting to become part of the ‘Ndrangheta, which has grown rich and powerful from cocaine trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities.

110 'Ndrangheta Members Convicted in Italy

[From article]
"Although lesser known than it's more celebrated Sicilian counterparts, investigators say the 'Ndrangheta is more powerful and more lucrative, controlling the drugs supply from South America into Europe.
One of the most infamous events involving the 'Ndrangheta was the infamous Duisburg Massacre of 2007 when six mobsters were gunned down in the German city by hitmen sent from Italy after falling out with a rival clan back in the mother country.
The 'Ndrangheta's power has increased dramatically in recent years and is now considered more than a threat than Sicily's Cosa Nostra,"
