Millions of ruby-red crustaceans have started their annual trek towards the sea, bringing traffic to a standstill across Christmas Island as swarms of the tiny crabs mark the world's biggest land crab migration.
The scarlett procession is world renown, with tourists and locals alike flocking to see the mass migration as the crabs set off to lay their eggs near the Pacific Ocean.
The colourful migration started a little late this year as the rains which trigger the movement didn't hit the island until last week.

The mass migration usually starts in October however a delay in rainfall meant the procession started a little later
The National Parks team works to close some roads on Christmas Island as the crabs can cause car accidents
A network of specially adapted crab bridges, tunnels and crossing places were added recently to reduce casualties
