He later told police he shoved her back, punched her twice in the head, that she fell to the kitchen floor and he continued to punch her.
“Upon seeing that Ms. Butler was not moving and was bleeding, he attempted to clean her face with a cloth,” police said. Then his telephone rang, police said. After that conversation, Starefos told police he made three more telephone calls. Then he dialed 911. Police said Starefos estimated about 25 minutes had passed.

“He was not a violent person at all,” said his aunt Doris Gardner, 83. “He is very calm and easygoing, always looking to help people out. ... He always walks away from trouble. He’s a very thoughtful kid.”
“He was only living in that house because he had nowhere else to go,” said
his father, Thomas A. Starefos, 74.
