Hidden Barriers
This industry oriented article promoting more funding for more treatment omits the basic Constitutional rights of patients. (SARAH KORONES, "STATE PANEL TO MAKE MENTAL ILLNESS AKIN TO ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION," Weekly Dig, June 10, 2009) Health Care for All lobbies for health care as a human right. Constitutional rights are real but remain unenforced for persons accused of mental illness. Matt Noyes (got them covered either way do ya? Yes and No!) says, "perhaps the biggest barrier to addressing these issues [non hospital care, transitioning back to the community, etc.] is the stigma surrounding mental illness."
That's industry talking points. No stigma, more people seeking treatment. Worse stigma comes from professionals -- psychiatrists, psychologists, lawyers, police, prosecutors, judges, and journalists. They deny equal access to Constitutional rights to persons accused of mental illness.
Health Care for all promotes more information but excludes former clients and civil rights activists who argue that psychiatry is not a valid form of treatment. Their position is shut out of the one-sided debate.
