The 76-year-old man found dead in a sailboat that washed shore in Beverly was a dedicated physics professor at UMass Lowell with a passion for the open seas.
Alexander Sachs of Gloucester was found in the boat when it ran ashore at Lynch Park on Friday. The initial investigation shows that Sachs likely had a “medical event,” and police suspect no foul play, Essex District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett’s office said.
“Sailing was his real passion,” said James Egan, a colleague at the university’s physics department. “He apparently died doing something he really loved to do.”
Egan, who worked with Sachs for 45 years, said Sachs grew up in Poland and France. Though Sachs was trained as a mechanical engineer, he taught and led research for the university’s physics department.
“He was always talking about sailing and asking me questions about computerized navigation … that he could download into the computer,” Egan said.
