A masked, hammer-wielding madman who’d already attacked four people in Manhattan was gunned down in the middle of a busy Midtown street Wednesday after smashing a cop in the head, officials said.
David Baril, 30, started swinging his claw hammer wildly at Officer Lauren O’Rourke when he spotted her following him on W. 37th St. and Eighth Ave. around 10 a.m., police said.
The deranged 220-pound brute managed to hit the petite O’Rourke in the head and shoulder three times before her partner, Geraldo Casaigne, 36, opened fire, sending shocked passersby running for cover.

Police said he’s the same man who went on a hammer-bashing spree Monday, hitting three women and a man with his weapon over a six-hour period. He attacked the male victim just blocks from where he was shot on Wednesday.
Victor Urena, 20, told the Daily News he was hanging out with three friends in front of Macy’s at 35th St. and Sixth Ave. when “this guy comes up to us and says, ‘What’s up, bitches?’”

He said they were crossing the street when Baril “came from behind and hit me with a hammer. And he just put the hammer in a bag and started running,” the Mercy College student said.
“I was shocked. I didn’t know what to do, where to go. I stood there. I felt my head, and I had blood on my hand. The people around me, they called the NYPD and the ambulance,” he said.

“I’m glad they got him,” Urena said.

A neighbor of Baril’s who asked not to be identified said he was “a good kid” who had “anger issues.”
Baril has eight prior arrests, including one for attacking a cop with sharp pointed object in 2013, sources said. The officer had tried to give him a summons for being in a Bronx park after closing, court papers say.
He was also wanted on a warrant for a March 21 assault at a KFC in the Bronx.
Court papers say he freaked out on a cashier after placing his order.
“Where is my $10? Give me my f---ing change?” he demanded, according to a criminal complaint.
As the cashier turned away, he punched her in the back. He was charged with misdemeanor assault, menacing and harassment. A bench warrant was issued April 22 after he failed to show up for a court appearance.

The man who allegedly attacked multiple New Yorkers with a hammer this week has been identified as David Baril, 30. Pictured in photos posted to his Instagram account.

Much of the anger in Baril's writing appears to be directed at women, in one case his mother.
'I murdered my mom/i killed her/purchased the gun/and stunned her/bullet in arm/she’s dead now/bleeding the blood/one to the head now/I don’t give a f***,' he wrote in another poem.
Police had been searching for Baril since Monday, when he used a hammer to beat up at least three in New York.
Baril whipped out his hammer again Wednesday morning when he passed two officers who recognized him from wanted posters and tried to speak to him[. . .]
Law enforcement sources tell the New York Daily News that the two officers recognized the man from a photo released Tuesday, and that he started swinging the hammer when they approached.
'He was swinging the hammer right at her,' the source told the Daily News. 'She’s trying to back up. She went down. The male officer shot him. The video is unbelievable.'
