Gov. Andrew Cuomo likened Carey Gabay, his murdered aide, to Jesus Christ in his eulogy Saturday — and called for earthly action in response.
[. . .]
Gabay, 43, who died on Sept. 16, was an innocent bystander caught in a crossfire and shot in the head at an early-morning J’Ouvert celebration before the Sept. 7 West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn.
[. . .]
Gabay, a Harvard-educated lawyer who grew up in public housing, was first deputy counsel for Empire State Development.
“This was an extraordinary, extraordinary human being,” Cuomo said outside. “He could have been making a million dollars at any law firm. Instead he is in public service.”

Carey W. Gabay ’94, a former president of Harvard's Undergraduate Council, died last Wednesday, after he was caught in the crossfire of a shooting in New York City the previous week. He was 43.
Gabay was attending a celebration before the West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn, N.Y., when the shooting began, according to The New York Times. He was declared brain-dead last Tuesday night and taken off a respirator.
Gabay’s classmates and co-representatives on the UC remember him as a dedicated and committed leader. Gabay’s devotion to public service did not end after his graduation—at the time of his death, Gabay worked as an administrative lawyer and aide to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He graduated from the College and also attended Harvard Law School.
During his time at Harvard, Gabay served as UC president at one of the most diverse periods the Council had seen. When Gabay took office, he did so as one of the Council's first top African-American leaders.

New York City hosted its first parade Sunday supporting people with disabilities, with more than 3,000 participants heading up Broadway using wheelchairs, canes and guide dogs.
[. . .]
About 4 percent of New York’s yellow cabs are accessible, said Allan Fromberg, a spokesman for the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission, compared to London, where every taxi can handle wheelchairs.
[. . .]
The city has planned a series of events relating to New Yorkers with disabilities. That includes an exhibit at the Brooklyn Historical Society titled “Gaining Access: The New York City Disability Rights Movement.”

Two Shot Dead During Mardi Gras in New Orleans

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office has identified Peter Dabney, 21, as one of two men killed during Thursday night's (Feb. 12, 2015) Muses parade shooting.
[From article]
As thousands of Mardi Gras spectators along St. Charles Avenue cheered and raised their hands in hopes of snagging a coveted shoe from a Krewe of Muses float rider, an argument between two groups ended with gunshots and chaos and two bodies lying on the sidewalk of a corner familiar to such violence.
It may never be known what started the fight Thursday night (Feb. 12) at St. Charles and Erato Street. But in its wake two young men are dead, and a third facing a possible life sentence as the accused gunman in a shooting forever linked to this year's Mardi Gras season.

Muslims Parade in NYC, Exhibit Hanging Women, Displaying Guns

[From article]
Isn't it amazing that in a city with one of the most stringent and severe anti-gun laws in the country... dozens of Muslim men can march around carrying firearms... and no one says anything? I for one, think they should be allowed to carry their weapons whenever they want... but New York City usually prosecutes offenders like these with "extreme prejudice." How is it that these men can march and freely break New York's laws without even a hint of police retribution?

Disabled Veteran Stopped From Handing Out Leaflets at July 4th Parade

[From article]
Kevin Adee, the parade manager, decided a disabled veteran named Charlie Makidon couldn't enter the parade. First, here's some background information on Mr. Makidon: He's from Backus, MN. He's the former Commander of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 2, which is based in St. Paul, MN.
Mr. Makidon's 'offense' was to attempt to pass out literature with Congressman Rick Nolan's voting record against military veterans. Mr. Makidon spent $160 on literature to hand out at the parade in his attempt to educate the voters in Minnesota's Eighth District.
[. . .]
When Mr. Stone heard what had happened, he confronted Adee. That's when Adee said that the parade was a family event. Stone replied that the Constitution is a family thing, too." In an interview with the Examiner, Stone noted that the Founding Fathers wanted political speech to be the highest form of protected speech. Finally, Stone said "I guess the First Amendment's protections don't extend all the way to the Canadian border."
Having a disabled veteran silenced anytime is unacceptable. Having that veteran's First Amendment rights shot down on the 4th of July is insulting to veterans and to the people that support veterans.
