The victim was shot once in the torso after the two men got into a heated argument on the platform of the 4 and 5 trains at the tail-end of the evening rush hour. Another person was with the victim and taken into custody.
The 69-year-old former correction officer pulled out his gun and fired at least once, when the victim spit at him during the scuffle, sources said.
EMS workers rushed the victim to Long Island College Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, sources said. The corrections officer was taken to Brooklyn Hospital as a precaution.
