He is being compensated for the very illness that tipped him over the edge. What’s seems to be the drama here? His work place “injury” and his subsequent criminality are surely separate issues?? It’s not like a subsequent criminal conviction makes it impossible for someone to have been hard done by. Some more interesting info the major news outlets didn’t dig up can be found here and here.
This sounds like the Flip Wilson character Geraldine's defense to buying a dress: "The Devil made me do it." It is also the better known Twinkie defense. If mental illness is the cause of violence and/or crime it is a simple matter to prevent crime by locking up all those so accused. The problem is that mental illnesses are arbitrary and capricious. Those illnesses are made up by consensus and have no pathology. It is a major league boondoggle with large funding from taxpayers supported by police agencies which can use such accusations to take one's freedom without any probable cause or due process protections.
